frost me gourmet cupcakes / downtown san diego
September 19th, 2014 Downtown, Mary, Multiple Locations, San Diego County Mary Desjean 17 Comments

Frost Me Gourmet Cupcakes is the newest cupcake shop to pop up in San Diego. I was recently invited to go down to Seaport Village and check out the new shop and stuff my face with cupcakes. Was I up to the task? OH YEAH!
The shop is owned by Audrey Hermes and her boyfriend Jon, who were incredibly welcoming and friendly. They’ve been on Cupcake Wars twice! The first time they didn’t win but the second time they took home the …

foodie finds (part 2)
September 18th, 2014 etc, Mary, products Mary Desjean 8 Comments

Here’s another installment of “Foodie Finds!” – various things that don’t warrant their own post filled with products and foods I’ve tried out recently.

There’s a Fresh n’ Easy near my work and I stop by there sometimes to pick up a few things. I spotted some “old time” looking candies. The first one: the Goo Goo Cluster. The Goo Goo Cluster was invented in 1912 by Howell Campbell in Nashville, TN. It was the first combination candy that had several types of …

la teresita cafeteria / tampa, fl
May 7th, 2014 Florida, Mary, Road Trips Mary Desjean 4 Comments

On our first morning in Tampa, Chris took us to La Teresita, a Cuban restaurant in Tampa. We went to the cafeteria portion (which is open 24 hours a day Thursday – Saturday) where there are U shaped tables and bar stools for sitting.

You can kind of see how it’s set up in this photo (but only a little bit). We’re sitting at the corner with Jake in the middle of us at the curved part of the U shape. …

Hello! We are back with another little tidbit about Harry’s Coffee Shop – the place my minion friend, David, wrote about last week. If you need a refresher, go and check out his review on Harry’s again. Go on, I’ll wait.
Okay, awesome! So now that you’d refreshed your memory, I’ve got a giveaway that should have gone with the post last week… but oh well. It’s happening today instead. Harry’s Coffee Shop wants to treat FIVE lovely readers to a …

harry’s coffee shop / la jolla, ca
January 13th, 2014 David, La Jolla, San Diego County David 5 Comments

Nestled in downtown La Jolla, Harry’s Coffee Shop is an established landmark that’s been serving up breakfast and lunch since 1960.  Now run by the family’s second generation, the restaurant is a throwback to traditional east coast diners with a long counter, vinyl booths, Norman Rockwell prints and vintage sports memorabilia lining the walls.  It’s warm, comfortable and familiar.

swoon dessert bar / north park – san diego
May 6th, 2013 Mary, North Park, San Diego County Mary Desjean 4 Comments

One of the stops for the Dishcrawl in North Park tomorrow will be Swoon Dessert Bar. I was lucky enough to get a little preview of Swoon to see what kind of dessert offerings they have at this dessert bar. I was excited to try it out since I’ve been wanting to visit for quite awhile.

[scottish caramel tea]
I started off with a hot tea to ease into the dessert tasting that came a bit later. This was a Pu-erh tea …

spiked, boozy coffee at islands restaurants

Hot drinks and booze. What more could you ask for this holiday season? Islands is offering these specialty drinks just in time to help you “get through the holidays” and I took it upon myself to try them out. You know, for you guys. For research. Totally.

There are three coffees to choose from.

[from l-r: cocomo, calypso, irish]
Each one brings a little something different to the coffee. If you come and have all three together (it is the holidays after all, …

gluten free dining at 2Good2B bakery cafe / encinitas – san diego, ca
November 2nd, 2012 Encinitas, Mary, San Diego County Mary Desjean 1 Comments

Let me just say right off the bat… I was skeptical. A gluten free restaurant with baked goods and regular food? Could this possibly be any good? As someone who doesn’t shun gluten at all and doesn’t have food allergies, I wasn’t sure how this whole experience would go down. But since I got invited to come in and check it out, I was willing to take the risk. And I have to say… I was pleasantly surprised.
