party food and twinkie bundt cake
August 28th, 2014 cake decorating, etc, Mary, Recipes Mary Desjean 2 Comments

The next day after laser tag was the day of the party for T! It was just a small affair with Jake’s sister and her family, along with a friend of the family and my dad (plus Maya).

Jake manned the grill for the occasion and now I have photographic evidence that he can cook! Muhahaha.

BBQ grilled chicken was the main meaty course for the party.

A summer party also isn’t complete without some grilled corn. Oh, corn on the cob, I’m …

laser tag and ocean rainbow ice cream / oceanside

T recently had a birthday (SIXTEEN!) and we had a weekend of all “Stuff T Wants To Do”. Actually, the laser tag was what he wanted to do and the ice cream was what I wanted to do. But it seemed silly to say “Mostly Stuff T Wants To Do”. But he ate some ice cream, so we’ll count it as some other stuff he wanted to do.
We started the day by going to Tip Top Meats for all-you-can-eat-meats breakfast. …

waffle nut donuts from vons
August 22nd, 2014 Mary, products Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Have you been to Vons lately and seen these new donuts? They’re called “Waffle-Nut” – as in, a hybrid of a waffle and a donut.

I spied these a couple of weeks ago and have now finally tried them all so I can report back to you. You’re welcome.

The very first one I tried was the Cinnamon & Sugar Waffle Nut donut. It looked promising. It had a good amount of sugar and cinnamon sprinkled all over the donut. But, I …

naseems bakery and kabob / sorrento valley
August 21st, 2014 Mary, Mira Mesa, San Diego County, Sorrento Valley Mary Desjean 8 Comments

Our office moved last fall closer to Sorrento Valley. This is one of the places I discovered this summer with Minion and Matt, my co-worker cohorts. The very first time we tried to visit was during the lunch rush and the place was packed with all of the Qualcomm workers and there was not a spot to sit in Nassaems. We ended up at some generic Mexican place a few doors down where I felt crowded and claustrophobic all at …

solare ristorante / liberty station
August 14th, 2014 Liberty Station, Mary, San Diego County Mary Desjean 6 Comments

I was recently invited to dine at Solare Ristorante in Liberty Station. Jake and I visited Solare many moons ago and didn’t have a really great experience back then, but I was happy to give them another shot to see how they are doing now.

When we arrived, the hostess asked where we wanted to sit (indoors or outdoors). Jake wanted to sit outside but it felt a little too muggy to me, so I choose indoors. The hostess asked if …

wienerschnitzel hot dogs

Ah, Wienerschnitzel. I hadn’t been here in years and two things converged to bring me here last weekend: 1) I got some gift cards from a PR person and 2) They were having a 61 cents anniversary special. Let’s do this.

The familiar steeple A frame is still present in all of the Wienerschnitzel’s in San Diego. I totally associate this look with hot dogs.

The menu. They don’t just have hot dogs anymore! There’s also a variety of chili burgers and …

danny’s donuts / vista

Right next door to Peppertree Frosty is a little place called Danny’s Donuts.

The place is named after Dan Abeyta, who worked in the donut industry for 46 years before he retired… and then went right back to it, opening Danny’s Donuts a few years after he retired. He missed the customer interaction and came out of retirement to open his own shop (after working at Dunkin’ Donuts on the East Coast, among other places). Danny created recipes featured in his …
