catalina island birthday promo
October 31st, 2014 Catalina, Los Angeles County, Mary Mary Desjean 0 Comments

My big birthday freebie this year was going to Catalina Island! Catalina Express offers a free round trip ticket on your actual birthday (value: $74). That’s the big catch – that you must leave on your birthday. Since my birthday fell on a Saturday this year, it was the perfect day to finally be able to visit Catalina.

They give you a birthday ribbon to wear. The birthday ribbon entitles you to various freebies and everyone wishes you a happy birthday …

Welcome to this year’s edition of Free Birthday Food! I have one special post planned for one of my BIG birthday freebies this year – stay tuned for that one! I got the majority of my free birthday food about a week before my birthday. All of them have various restrictions and expiration dates so be sure to read over your coupons! Some of them also allow you to only view a coupon a few times so be sure to …

birthday dinner at d bar
October 29th, 2014 Hillcrest, Mary, San Diego County Mary Desjean 8 Comments

This is not the freebie birthday post. Those will start tomorrow! This is the “it’s my birthday and I just want to go out to eat” post at one of my favorite restaurants, D Bar in Hillcrest. I actually prefer the lunch menu to the dinner menu, but as long as you load me up with some macaroni and cheese then no one will get hurt.
I had a few friends join me for dinner! Let’s see some of the tasty …

vessel restaurant at kona kai resort
October 28th, 2014 Mary, San Diego County, Shelter Island Mary Desjean 2 Comments

I’m on the verge of wrapping up all of my birthday goodies for my free birthday posts – so stay tuned for those very soon! But first… let’s take a peek at a recent Media Dinner I was invited to attend earlier this month at the Vessel Restaurant at the Kona Kai Resort. I visited the Vessel Restaurant last year for another media dinner and this time around Stacey tagged along for the fun.
The restaurant has been renovated since last …

apple picking in julian + apple pie crumb bars
October 8th, 2014 Julian, Mary, Recipes, San Diego County Mary Desjean 12 Comments

Last year Jake, Laura, T and I went pear picking in Julian and this year we’re back to apple picking. I actually wanted to go pear picking again, or to find a farm that had both apples and pears, but sadly apple picking season is very, very short this year. O’Dells, where we went pear picking last year, was already closed for the season along with many other orchards. California’s drought has really hit the orchards hard this year and I …

frost me gourmet cupcakes / downtown san diego
September 19th, 2014 Downtown, Mary, Multiple Locations, San Diego County Mary Desjean 17 Comments

Frost Me Gourmet Cupcakes is the newest cupcake shop to pop up in San Diego. I was recently invited to go down to Seaport Village and check out the new shop and stuff my face with cupcakes. Was I up to the task? OH YEAH!
The shop is owned by Audrey Hermes and her boyfriend Jon, who were incredibly welcoming and friendly. They’ve been on Cupcake Wars twice! The first time they didn’t win but the second time they took home the …

foodie finds (part 2)
September 18th, 2014 etc, Mary, products Mary Desjean 8 Comments

Here’s another installment of “Foodie Finds!” – various things that don’t warrant their own post filled with products and foods I’ve tried out recently.

There’s a Fresh n’ Easy near my work and I stop by there sometimes to pick up a few things. I spotted some “old time” looking candies. The first one: the Goo Goo Cluster. The Goo Goo Cluster was invented in 1912 by Howell Campbell in Nashville, TN. It was the first combination candy that had several types of …

civil war days + the donuttery / huntington beach, ca
September 10th, 2014 Cheap Eats, etc, Huntington Beach, Mary, Orange County Mary Desjean 14 Comments

This was our third year attending the Civil War Reenactment in Huntington Beach. It’s held every year over Labor Day weekend and is sponsored by the City of Huntington Beach. It’s one of the free reenactments you can attend. You can learn so much about our country’s history by watching the battle and talking with many of the living historians attending the event. Here’s my recap of this year’s reenactment (plus, donuts at the end).

I have never really thought about …
