apple picking in julian + apple pie crumb bars
October 8th, 2014 Julian, Mary, Recipes, San Diego County Mary Desjean 12 Comments

Last year Jake, Laura, T and I went pear picking in Julian and this year we’re back to apple picking. I actually wanted to go pear picking again, or to find a farm that had both apples and pears, but sadly apple picking season is very, very short this year. O’Dells, where we went pear picking last year, was already closed for the season along with many other orchards. California’s drought has really hit the orchards hard this year and I …

frost me gourmet cupcakes / downtown san diego
September 19th, 2014 Downtown, Mary, Multiple Locations, San Diego County Mary Desjean 17 Comments

Frost Me Gourmet Cupcakes is the newest cupcake shop to pop up in San Diego. I was recently invited to go down to Seaport Village and check out the new shop and stuff my face with cupcakes. Was I up to the task? OH YEAH!
The shop is owned by Audrey Hermes and her boyfriend Jon, who were incredibly welcoming and friendly. They’ve been on Cupcake Wars twice! The first time they didn’t win but the second time they took home the …

foodie finds (part 2)
September 18th, 2014 etc, Mary, products Mary Desjean 8 Comments

Here’s another installment of “Foodie Finds!” – various things that don’t warrant their own post filled with products and foods I’ve tried out recently.

There’s a Fresh n’ Easy near my work and I stop by there sometimes to pick up a few things. I spotted some “old time” looking candies. The first one: the Goo Goo Cluster. The Goo Goo Cluster was invented in 1912 by Howell Campbell in Nashville, TN. It was the first combination candy that had several types of …

civil war days + the donuttery / huntington beach, ca
September 10th, 2014 Cheap Eats, etc, Huntington Beach, Mary, Orange County Mary Desjean 14 Comments

This was our third year attending the Civil War Reenactment in Huntington Beach. It’s held every year over Labor Day weekend and is sponsored by the City of Huntington Beach. It’s one of the free reenactments you can attend. You can learn so much about our country’s history by watching the battle and talking with many of the living historians attending the event. Here’s my recap of this year’s reenactment (plus, donuts at the end).

I have never really thought about …

friday food finds
September 5th, 2014 etc, Mary, products, San Diego County Mary Desjean 17 Comments

I had a bunch of things that didn’t quite constitute a full post, so I’m going to stick them all together and call it “food finds”. Why not!

[housemade gyro with potato salad from wich addiction]
Here’s a terrible photo of something SUPER delicious from Wich Addiction. A couple of weeks ago the special of the week was a housemade gyro with their own tzatziki sauce on a scallion flatbread. I almost ate my screen looking at this beautiful sandwich again. The …

party food and twinkie bundt cake
August 28th, 2014 cake decorating, etc, Mary, Recipes Mary Desjean 4 Comments

The next day after laser tag was the day of the party for T! It was just a small affair with Jake’s sister and her family, along with a friend of the family and my dad (plus Maya).

Jake manned the grill for the occasion and now I have photographic evidence that he can cook! Muhahaha.

BBQ grilled chicken was the main meaty course for the party.

A summer party also isn’t complete without some grilled corn. Oh, corn on the cob, I’m …

laser tag and ocean rainbow ice cream / oceanside

T recently had a birthday (SIXTEEN!) and we had a weekend of all “Stuff T Wants To Do”. Actually, the laser tag was what he wanted to do and the ice cream was what I wanted to do. But it seemed silly to say “Mostly Stuff T Wants To Do”. But he ate some ice cream, so we’ll count it as some other stuff he wanted to do.
We started the day by going to Tip Top Meats for all-you-can-eat-meats breakfast. …

waffle nut donuts from vons
August 22nd, 2014 Mary, products Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Have you been to Vons lately and seen these new donuts? They’re called “Waffle-Nut” – as in, a hybrid of a waffle and a donut.

I spied these a couple of weeks ago and have now finally tried them all so I can report back to you. You’re welcome.

The very first one I tried was the Cinnamon & Sugar Waffle Nut donut. It looked promising. It had a good amount of sugar and cinnamon sprinkled all over the donut. But, I …
