beijing wok and grill / fountain valley, ca

Jake suggested after we got the donuts that we could just call it a day and go home and NOT get Chinese food. I gave him the most withering look I could muster. As if! OF COURSE we need to try another Chinese place. Pfffft. It’s all in the name of research for you, my friends.
My choice for this trip was a place called Beijing Wok and Grill which was a pretty quick drive from the Donuttery. Beijing Wok and …

civil war days + the donuttery / huntington beach, ca

This was our third year attending the Civil War Reenactment in Huntington Beach. It’s held every year over Labor Day weekend and is sponsored by the City of Huntington Beach. It’s one of the free reenactments you can attend. You can learn so much about our country’s history by watching the battle and talking with many of the living historians attending the event. Here’s my recap of this year’s reenactment (plus, donuts at the end).

I have never really thought about …

ham n scram / westminster, ca

Over Labor Day weekend this year, Jake, T, and I made our way back up to Orange County to check out the Civil War Reenactment once again. But first… we had to stop for breakfast. Breakfast is very important after a long drive and a little Yelp research led me to a little place in Westminster called Ham n Scram.

It’s not a big spot. There’s about four tables inside and the place was full that morning. We were worried we’d …

el rodeo mexican food / city heights

One afternoon Jake and I were running around doing a few errands and needed a quick bite to eat. The first place we tried to go wasn’t open (a new place on University Ave. called Happy Rooster – how awesome is that name?) and Jake picked this second spot – a Mexican place on El Cajon Blvd. called El Rodeo Mexican Food.

It’s one of the many places that line El Cajon Blvd. and is pretty close to Hoover High School. …

laser tag and ocean rainbow ice cream / oceanside

T recently had a birthday (SIXTEEN!) and we had a weekend of all “Stuff T Wants To Do”. Actually, the laser tag was what he wanted to do and the ice cream was what I wanted to do. But it seemed silly to say “Mostly Stuff T Wants To Do”. But he ate some ice cream, so we’ll count it as some other stuff he wanted to do.
We started the day by going to Tip Top Meats for all-you-can-eat-meats breakfast. …

jv’s mexican food / linda vista

One evening after one of Jake’s softball games, we needed foooooods.

Jake plays in Pacific Beach now and we had planned on going to Mr. Frostie, but it had closed already. We ended up going over to Linda Vista and trying out another one of the “Top California burritos in San Diego” (according to Thrillist) at JV’S Mexican Food.
It was after 9PM and the tiny parking lot was full. What. We ended up having to park on the street.
I didn’t take …

hui tou xiang noodles house / san gabriel, ca

One glance at the website for Hui Tou Xiang Noodles House was enough to convince me that I needed to try those dumplings prominently featured on their website. Luckily my friends Heather and Alyssa (who used to write for this blog) are foodie adventurous! Let’s see what sorts of deliciousness lurks in the San Gabriel Valley!

south cali steak burger bar / chula vista

Last weekend before we went to go see Gabriel Iglesias in The Fluffy Movie, we stopped by this place in Chula Vista for a little lunch first. It’s called South Cali Steak Burger Bar.

It’s not much to look at from the outside and I’m sure you’d easily bypass this place just driving by on the road. There are three parking spots in the front.

Inside there’s about 9 tables, one is a big table for larger groups (the one behind Jake …
