hodad’s + birthdays

T turned 17 last week. Jake and I remarked profusely about how time passes so quickly. I feel like summer just started and now we’re nearing the final days of summer instead. T will be starting his junior year of high school in a couple of weeks and I’m amazed at how much he’s grown over the years. For his birthday, we went to Hodad’s in Downtown San Diego with Jake’s mom, T, Jake and I all in tow. I …

Ahhh, Las Vegas. It’s pretty much a rite of passage for all young adults in Southern California to make a pilgrimage to this unholy land of neon lights, cheap alcoholic drinks, gambling, and staying up all night until you pass out and wake up in a hotel room with at least five other people. You do this at least once a year (maybe more) until you get a little older and the allure of Vegas starts to get a little …

the grove grinder

The Grove Grinder is one of those little places we’ve passed by so many times without ever actually going in. One recent weekend it was finally time for us to check out this little building and see what it was all about.

The Grove Grinder is across the street from the GTM store and about a stone’s throw away from the Giant Lemon. You can see it on a side street if you’re driving up Broadway towards the lemon. It looks …

mary’s donuts

Looking through my past donut posts I was surprised to find I have never done a dedicated post to my favorite donut shop in town! What?! Oh it’s been mentioned on here before but I felt it was high time to officially share with you my very favorite donuts in San Diego: Mary’s Donuts.
I swear it’s not because we share a name, either.

I don’t even remember how long we’ve been coming to Mary’s Donuts but it’s been a few years now. …

el cilantro mexican restaurant

Over the weekend Jake and I headed down to Imperial Beach to try and see if we could catch some Stardust Donuts. It was a failed endeavor though as we drove up we could clearly see there were no donuts left. Ahhh! Foiled again! So the trip south wouldn’t be a total loss, I found us a new-to-us place to try called El Cilantro Mexican Restaurant.

El Cilantro is tucked away in the back of the Imperial Beach Plaza Shopping Center, …

hot dogs el tigre food stand

Last month after one of Jake’s softball games, we were driving around in search of food. We decided to drive east on University Avenue from the 805 to just wander until we found something that caught our eye. That’s when I saw a food stand on the street in front of a body shop called Tito’s Body Shop. It’s catty corner to Canada Steak Burger and we parked in a lot next to a little market.

The sign that caught my …
