Last week was Jake and I’s 7th Anniversary! Jake had to work on the evening of our actual anniversary so we weren’t planning on celebrating until later in the week but I managed to get him to come and have lunch with me on the day of. He was late in coming by to get me and I was starting to get REALLY cranky pants on him because the HUNGER was consuming all of the my thoughts.
Since I knew I …

eating burgers at a taco shop | casa sonora / oak park – san diego, ca
March 31st, 2014Cheap Eats, Mary, Oak Park, San Diego CountyMary Desjean 9 Comments

Back in the day, Fred’s Old Fashioned Burgers was Jake and I’s favorite spot for burgers. It was in our regular rotation even though we had to go alllllll the way out to El Cajon for it. I loved their peanut butter chocolate shakes dearly and I especially loved their simple burgers and tasty french fries. We noticed a serious decline in quality and customer service before the El Cajon location shut down last year. There was still Alpine, but …

March 28th, 2014Cheap Eats, Mary, productsMary Desjean 6 Comments

Doing a quick little post today on some uh… interesting looking snacks I picked up at H Mart recently. I’ve bought a lot of the weird snacks at various Asian markets to give away to other people and I find I don’t always try them myself… so I figured I’d start! Here’s what I picked up during this round of snacks.

Jack ‘n Jill’s Piattos was the first thing I picked up. I grew up with Jack ‘n Jill’s products. When …

breakfast burritos with tortillas de harina el trigal tortilleria

This tortilleria is where we were trying to go over the weekend which ran us into the panaderia with those delicious caramel empanadas… YUM.

We got out of the car and stood in front of the tortilleria for a bit. The “OPEN” sign was on but it was clearly the opposite of open…  the sign in the window stated they closed at 2PM on Saturdays and there was a vague sign in Spanish pointing next door.

Well, I’m sure if I knew …

hilda’s bakery panaderia / city heights – san diego, ca

After we dropped off the kiddos, Jake and I went on a few errands. We had been talking about making tacos for dinner and wanted to check out this place in City Heights that made fresh tortillas. When we got there though, the place was closed. Sad faces, man! They closed at 2PM but there was a sign on the door in Spanish and pointed next door. My Spanish is not that good and I vaguely understood that tortillas were sold …

tastea grill | bbq grill & sushi rolls / chula vista – san diego, ca
March 24th, 2014Cheap Eats, Chula Vista, Mary, San Diego CountyMary Desjean 6 Comments

Over the weekend Jake and I picked up the kiddies, S and A, for a quick afternoon of movies and lunch (hello, The Muppets – which was really awesome). There’s some kind of stomach bug going around since Jake was sick last week, so was his mom, and his other son, T and these two kiddos… man, did someone put something in our water?! Anyway… after the movie we headed over to this little place in Chula Vista called Tastea …

san diego burger week roundup
March 14th, 2014Cheap Eats, Mary, San Diego CountyMary Desjean 18 Comments

I read about San Diego CityBeat’s San Diego Burger Week on Janice’s blog, Food is My Favorite. I had never heard of burger week before! A bunch of restaurants around San Diego are offering up burgers for a mere $5. Every burger is a little bit different, with different toppings and various takes and there are even a few veggie burgers thrown in for the non-meat eating folks. Here’s my recap of the few places I tried during week – …

tom’s chinese bbq + dim sum / city heights – san diego

Jake used to live in the heart of City Heights and used to work at the Albertson’s on University near I-15. We spotted this place some years ago (six to seven, almost the whole length of our relationship) just driving up and down that dreaded street: Tom’s BBQ. We could tell it was Chinese from the top sign we couldn’t read but we didn’t really know anything else about it. Whenever one of us would mention it, we’d shrug our …

about this site

My name is Mary and I live in San Diego. I've been blogging since 2006 as a hobby - it's my fun, creative outlet! Some random things about me: I'm a front end web developer, I love peanut butter, cookies, warm cupcakes, puppy noses, star gazing, new bags of sugar, sprinkles, cupcake wrappers, egg rolls, eating french fries with ice cream, driving with the windows down, snuggling, wes anderson movies, staying up too late reading a good book and Jake. These are my adventures in all things food. Hope you enjoy the ride.
