peppertree frosty / vista
July 21st, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, San Diego County, Vista Mary Desjean 10 Comments

Two weekend ago when I wasn’t feeling very well, Jake and S were over and I decided that the only thing I really wanted to do that weekend was take a trip up to Vista to try out Pepper Tree Frosty and Danny’s Donuts. I read about Danny’s Donuts and Pepper Tree Corner on Pink Candles of Ridgemont High. CC wrote about their awesome blueberry donuts (post forthcoming) and I also wanted to try the food over at Pepper Tree …

rita’s italian ice & iwok chinese restaurant / bonita – san diego, ca

Last month Jake and I had A and S for the afternoon and we took them to see the new Transformers movie. In case you’re wondering, no, you really don’t need to go see the new Transformers movie. If you really feel you must watch it (and haven’t already) … seriously, wait for it to come out on DVD so you don’t feel too ripped off. We go to the Regal Rancho Del Rey theater in Chula Vista where movie …

burrito eating at sarita’s taco shop / spring valley, ca
July 10th, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, San Diego County, Spring Valley Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Recently Jake and I saw this Thrillist article talking about the best California burritos in San Diego. In case you don’t know, a California burrito is basically a carne asada burrito with potatoes added – usually in the form of french fries. Jake and I haven’t been to many of the “best” burritos on this list and he wanted to check out Sarita’s Taco Shop in particular. It’s not too far from his house and we recently made a little …

my diner / boston, ma
June 30th, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, Massachusetts, Road Trips Mary Desjean 8 Comments

Earlier this month I traveled to Massachusetts for a quick trip with my parents to attend my grandfather’s funeral. While it was a somber occasion and reason, it was nice to be able to get back East for a quick trip, to see my family, and to celebrate my grandfather’s life.
We took an overnight red eye flight and got into Boston around 6:30AM. Logan International hadn’t quite fully awakened by the time we got off the plane, but the first …

mamma lina’s / mira mesa – san diego, ca

I last wrote about Mamma Lina’s back in 2009 – man, that was like FIVE years ago! I found this place while I was still at my old job and now that my current job moved closer to Sorrento Valley, Mamma Lina’s has been back in my regular lunch rotation. Things have change a bit recently.
There used to be this huge hedge that made it hard to see the deli:

They’ve removed that and …

el rey de las fritas / little havana – miami, fl
June 4th, 2014 Florida, Mary, Road Trips Mary Desjean 4 Comments

I only have a few Florida related posts left, so let me get to another one before I forget all about what Florida was like!
After cruising around Key West in the humid warm weather, we left the Keys and traveled up to Miami. I really wanted to have lunch in Miami and picked a place in Little Havana called El Rey de las Fritas.

I read about fritas on Yelp and after doing a Google search and they sounded interesting enough. …

la teresita cafeteria / tampa, fl
May 7th, 2014 Florida, Mary, Road Trips Mary Desjean 4 Comments

On our first morning in Tampa, Chris took us to La Teresita, a Cuban restaurant in Tampa. We went to the cafeteria portion (which is open 24 hours a day Thursday – Saturday) where there are U shaped tables and bar stools for sitting.

You can kind of see how it’s set up in this photo (but only a little bit). We’re sitting at the corner with Jake in the middle of us at the curved part of the U shape. …

pauly’s pizza joint / miramar – san diego, ca
April 23rd, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, Miramar, San Diego County Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Last week was Jake and I’s 7th Anniversary! Jake had to work on the evening of our actual anniversary so we weren’t planning on celebrating until later in the week but I managed to get him to come and have lunch with me on the day of. He was late in coming by to get me and I was starting to get REALLY cranky pants on him because the HUNGER was consuming all of the my thoughts.
Since I knew I …
