la dumpling crawl

Two weekends ago we embarked on yet another food crawl. This crawl’s theme? DUMPLINGS.
Now, while I love dumplings and I love San Diego, San Diego has a serious lack of delicious dumplings so we headed north to Los Angeles for a dumpling crawl. Sorry, San Diego. I still love you.
The following dumplings are in order of visitation. I’ll give you the low-down on the numbers and statistics at the end of this post (or you can skip to end if …

beijing wok and grill / fountain valley, ca

Jake suggested after we got the donuts that we could just call it a day and go home and NOT get Chinese food. I gave him the most withering look I could muster. As if! OF COURSE we need to try another Chinese place. Pfffft. It’s all in the name of research for you, my friends.
My choice for this trip was a place called Beijing Wok and Grill which was a pretty quick drive from the Donuttery. Beijing Wok and …

hui tou xiang noodles house / san gabriel, ca

One glance at the website for Hui Tou Xiang Noodles House was enough to convince me that I needed to try those dumplings prominently featured on their website. Luckily my friends Heather and Alyssa (who used to write for this blog) are foodie adventurous! Let’s see what sorts of deliciousness lurks in the San Gabriel Valley!

rita’s italian ice & iwok chinese restaurant / bonita – san diego, ca

Last month Jake and I had A and S for the afternoon and we took them to see the new Transformers movie. In case you’re wondering, no, you really don’t need to go see the new Transformers movie. If you really feel you must watch it (and haven’t already) … seriously, wait for it to come out on DVD so you don’t feel too ripped off. We go to the Regal Rancho Del Rey theater in Chula Vista where movie …

tom’s chinese bbq + dim sum / city heights – san diego

Jake used to live in the heart of City Heights and used to work at the Albertson’s on University near I-15. We spotted this place some years ago (six to seven, almost the whole length of our relationship) just driving up and down that dreaded street: Tom’s BBQ. We could tell it was Chinese from the top sign we couldn’t read but we didn’t really know anything else about it. Whenever one of us would mention it, we’d shrug our …

luong hai ky chinese noodle restaurant / mira mesa – san diego, ca

I feel like I am battling and fighting off a cold right now. Let’s keep this short and sweet!
I originally came to Luong Hai Kyfor one of their kick ass lunch specials (garlic chili pork chop for $6.55) but I didn’t take any photos of that because I didn’t feel like it that day. A few weeks later I took Jake and T here for a little dinner.

[egg rolls – $5.95]
I want to eat egg rolls, like, all of the …

french concession / hillcrest – san diego, ca
January 17th, 2014 Hillcrest, Mary, San Diego County mary 7 Comments

Last month I was invited to check out the new French Concession restaurant in Hillcrest – an operation that’s got a menu chock full of tasty sounding dim sum items. It’s not the traditional dim sum as there are no carts being pushed around but rather a menu full of various offerings that you choose from. I’ve never had “real” dim sum with carts and all, but one day I will (oh, yes I will).

My friend, Laura, came with me …

This post is written as a part of ShopMoxie’s Best of the US Series!
San Diego is filled to the brim with fancy places here and there. As a local, you’ll rarely find me eating out Downtown or in the touristy parts of San Diego (I’m looking at you, Old Town). Instead, I like checking out the little hole in the walls for some really awesomely good and awesomely cheap eats.
