mini breakfast pizzas on pretzel rolls
September 12th, 2014 Mary, Recipes Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Happy Friday aka Happy Pre-Weekend! I feel like I’ve been waiting all week for this day to come around. Let’s reminisce about some food I made last weekend. Specifically breakfast food. Pizza breakfast food. Mini pizza breakfast food. On pretzel rolls. Yesssss.
Originally I was going to do these on English muffins but Jake and I had bought 4 soft pretzel sticks at Trader Joe’s and they were begging to be used. I had to indulge them.

I really like the mini …

civil war days + the donuttery / huntington beach, ca
September 10th, 2014 Cheap Eats, etc, Huntington Beach, Mary, Orange County Mary Desjean 14 Comments

This was our third year attending the Civil War Reenactment in Huntington Beach. It’s held every year over Labor Day weekend and is sponsored by the City of Huntington Beach. It’s one of the free reenactments you can attend. You can learn so much about our country’s history by watching the battle and talking with many of the living historians attending the event. Here’s my recap of this year’s reenactment (plus, donuts at the end).

I have never really thought about …

ham n scram / westminster, ca
September 9th, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, Orange County, Westminster Mary Desjean 14 Comments

Over Labor Day weekend this year, Jake, T, and I made our way back up to Orange County to check out the Civil War Reenactment once again. But first… we had to stop for breakfast. Breakfast is very important after a long drive and a little Yelp research led me to a little place in Westminster called Ham n Scram.

It’s not a big spot. There’s about four tables inside and the place was full that morning. We were worried we’d …

waffle nut donuts from vons
August 22nd, 2014 Mary, products Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Have you been to Vons lately and seen these new donuts? They’re called “Waffle-Nut” – as in, a hybrid of a waffle and a donut.

I spied these a couple of weeks ago and have now finally tried them all so I can report back to you. You’re welcome.

The very first one I tried was the Cinnamon & Sugar Waffle Nut donut. It looked promising. It had a good amount of sugar and cinnamon sprinkled all over the donut. But, I …

perry’s cafe / old town
August 8th, 2014 Mary, Old Town, San Diego County Mary Desjean 11 Comments

I was up quite early one morning last week to drop my folks off at the airport. I decided to treat myself to a little early morning breakfast before work. It was a little after 6am and the sun hadn’t fully popped out yet. It was odd being up and about that early.

I decided to hit up Perry’s Cafe in Old Town. I hadn’t visited in many years and when I did it was late on a Saturday morning when …

danny’s donuts / vista
July 22nd, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, San Diego County, Vista Mary Desjean 10 Comments

Right next door to Peppertree Frosty is a little place called Danny’s Donuts.

The place is named after Dan Abeyta, who worked in the donut industry for 46 years before he retired… and then went right back to it, opening Danny’s Donuts a few years after he retired. He missed the customer interaction and came out of retirement to open his own shop (after working at Dunkin’ Donuts on the East Coast, among other places). Danny created recipes featured in his …

richard walker’s pancake house / la jolla – san diego, ca

Richard Walker’s Pancake House has recently expanded in San Diego. The original location is in Downtown and a new spot just opened up in Downtown La Jolla. I was recently invited to come in and check out the new location and try out some of their tasty breakfast items.

Jake and I don’t dine too often in La Jolla since parking can be a pain and it’s usually crowded around here. We managed to snag parking in our go-to parking area …
