waffle nut donuts from vons
August 22nd, 2014 Mary, products Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Have you been to Vons lately and seen these new donuts? They’re called “Waffle-Nut” – as in, a hybrid of a waffle and a donut.

I spied these a couple of weeks ago and have now finally tried them all so I can report back to you. You’re welcome.

The very first one I tried was the Cinnamon & Sugar Waffle Nut donut. It looked promising. It had a good amount of sugar and cinnamon sprinkled all over the donut. But, I …

perry’s cafe / old town
August 8th, 2014 Mary, Old Town, San Diego County Mary Desjean 11 Comments

I was up quite early one morning last week to drop my folks off at the airport. I decided to treat myself to a little early morning breakfast before work. It was a little after 6am and the sun hadn’t fully popped out yet. It was odd being up and about that early.

I decided to hit up Perry’s Cafe in Old Town. I hadn’t visited in many years and when I did it was late on a Saturday morning when …

danny’s donuts / vista
July 22nd, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, San Diego County, Vista Mary Desjean 10 Comments

Right next door to Peppertree Frosty is a little place called Danny’s Donuts.

The place is named after Dan Abeyta, who worked in the donut industry for 46 years before he retired… and then went right back to it, opening Danny’s Donuts a few years after he retired. He missed the customer interaction and came out of retirement to open his own shop (after working at Dunkin’ Donuts on the East Coast, among other places). Danny created recipes featured in his …

richard walker’s pancake house / la jolla – san diego, ca

Richard Walker’s Pancake House has recently expanded in San Diego. The original location is in Downtown and a new spot just opened up in Downtown La Jolla. I was recently invited to come in and check out the new location and try out some of their tasty breakfast items.

Jake and I don’t dine too often in La Jolla since parking can be a pain and it’s usually crowded around here. We managed to snag parking in our go-to parking area …

my diner / boston, ma
June 30th, 2014 Cheap Eats, Mary, Massachusetts, Road Trips Mary Desjean 8 Comments

Earlier this month I traveled to Massachusetts for a quick trip with my parents to attend my grandfather’s funeral. While it was a somber occasion and reason, it was nice to be able to get back East for a quick trip, to see my family, and to celebrate my grandfather’s life.
We took an overnight red eye flight and got into Boston around 6:30AM. Logan International hadn’t quite fully awakened by the time we got off the plane, but the first …

[recipe] strawberry scones with coconut cream glaze
June 13th, 2014 Mary, Recipes Mary Desjean 16 Comments

National Strawberry Shortcake Day is tomorrow and is totally a thing, you guys. I only know of it because I was told about it but I feel like every day should celebrate a different dessert. I wonder if there’s a Coconut Cream Pie day or a Peanut Butter Pie day or a Chocolate Covered Strawberry day. Do these other things exist?? I’m too lazy to Google them right now.

Like I said – I was told all about National Strawberry Shortcake …

bella vista social club and caffe revisit / la jolla, ca
June 11th, 2014 La Jolla, Mary, San Diego County Mary Desjean 6 Comments

It probably seems pretty weird that I have two “social club” back to back reviews in place this week. It is weird now that I think about it. It’s not really on purpose, either. Just a crazy co-wink-a-dink.

My cousin was in town recently and we played tourist and showed her around town. We took her to a few places and one of them was Bella Vista Social Club and Caffe for breakfast and to check out the pretty views at …

donut panic / grantville – san diego, ca
May 30th, 2014 Cheap Eats, Grantville, Mary, Mission Gorge Mary Desjean 16 Comments

I first heard about Donut Panic from a post CC made on her blog about it. I read “fancy gourmet flavors” and “reasonable price” and I was instantly interested! After a ho hum experience with Donut Bar, I’ve been wary of any gourmet donuts with high prices but the reasonable price part struck a cord with me and I wanted to check it out. I told Jake about it and he actually stopped in here without me and talked to …
