breakfast burritos with tortillas de harina el trigal tortilleria

This tortilleria is where we were trying to go over the weekend which ran us into the panaderia with those delicious caramel empanadas… YUM.

We got out of the car and stood in front of the tortilleria for a bit. The “OPEN” sign was on but it was clearly the opposite of open…  the sign in the window stated they closed at 2PM on Saturdays and there was a vague sign in Spanish pointing next door.

Well, I’m sure if I knew …

hilda’s bakery panaderia / city heights – san diego, ca

After we dropped off the kiddos, Jake and I went on a few errands. We had been talking about making tacos for dinner and wanted to check out this place in City Heights that made fresh tortillas. When we got there though, the place was closed. Sad faces, man! They closed at 2PM but there was a sign on the door in Spanish and pointed next door. My Spanish is not that good and I vaguely understood that tortillas were sold …

tom’s chinese bbq + dim sum / city heights – san diego

Jake used to live in the heart of City Heights and used to work at the Albertson’s on University near I-15. We spotted this place some years ago (six to seven, almost the whole length of our relationship) just driving up and down that dreaded street: Tom’s BBQ. We could tell it was Chinese from the top sign we couldn’t read but we didn’t really know anything else about it. Whenever one of us would mention it, we’d shrug our …

tamale hunting in san diego

I have some kind of thing for tamales. I really love a good tamale. I used to go to a particular tamale vendor weekly at the farmer’s market in Scripps Ranch a few years ago – when to my dismay that vendor was gone and replaced with a “gourmet” tamale person who charged more and the tamales were NOT as good despite their snooty gourmet status. Gourmet does not equal good! It’s just a fancy word so you can charge …

que huong blogger lunch / city heights – san diego, ca
February 12th, 2014City Heights, Mary, San Diego CountyMary Desjean 4 Comments

Last month I had the pleasure of dining with a few other very lovely bloggers: Kirbie of Kirbie’s Cravings (the organizer), CC of Pink Candles at Ridgemont High, Cathy of mmm-yoso, C of CAB Cooks, Darlene of My Burning Kitchen, Jinxi from Jinxi Eats and myself. The place of choice? Que Huong in City Heights.

I had visited Que Huong one other time and I don’t remember what I tried, but I remember not being very impressed. This time around though, …

san diego cheese crawl
October 15th, 2013City Heights, etc, Mary, North Park, San Diego CountyMary Desjean 11 Comments

To follow the Bacon Crawl I organized earlier this year, I took my co-workers on a little Cheese Crawl of San Diego! We originally intended to go to four places but we all cried uncle after three, and considering we ate way right off the bat it’s not really that surprising we called uncle so early.
The cohorts for this crawl were: myself, Jake, A. (Jake’s daughter), Lauren, David, Allison and Matt.
Our first stop was at Urban Solace:

[cheese biscuits – $5.75 …

elidia’s bakery | panaderia / city heights – san diego, ca

The first time I ever went to Elidia’s Bakery was because of Jake and his love of trying new taco shops. He wanted to check out this place that can be seen right off Fairmount in City Heights. While the taco shop turned out to be nothing special, I did drag us over to Elidia’s Bakery first for some treats. We’ve back a few times since that first time and I finally snapped a few photos on one of my …

tacos de mexicali / city heights – san diego, ca

My dad got a coupon to Tacos de Mexicali and so I copied him and got the same coupon for myself thanks to Google Offers. The promise of handmade tortillas is a serious draw and one recent evening Jake, T and I went over to check it out. It’s not too far from where Jake lives making it easily accessible to us. Always a plus.

Their menu is fairly simple. They have a variety of grilled meats available in taco, burrito …

about this site

My name is Mary and I live in San Diego. I've been blogging since 2006 as a hobby - it's my fun, creative outlet! Some random things about me: I'm a front end web developer, I love peanut butter, cookies, warm cupcakes, puppy noses, star gazing, new bags of sugar, sprinkles, cupcake wrappers, egg rolls, eating french fries with ice cream, driving with the windows down, snuggling, wes anderson movies, staying up too late reading a good book and Jake. These are my adventures in all things food. Hope you enjoy the ride.
