california grapes demo with chef marcela valladolid
September 26th, 2014 etc, Mary, products Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Last week I was invited to attend an event on behalf of the California Grapes Commission with spokesperson Chef Marcela Valladolid. We were there to learn more about grapes and how to add grapes into recipes. Apparently you can do more with grapes then just stuffing them in your mouth (or freezing them and putting them in your drinks)!

There was a big beautiful box with three styles of grapes: green, red and black. I honestly have never really purchased black …

Souplantation Frankenstein Creations aka Design Your Own Delicious

I was recently invited to come back in to Souplantation during their new promotion called “Design Your Own Delicious“. It’s a contest using social media where you design something new using the food from Souplantation to create your own unique spin on a meal. I like to think of it as “Frankentstein Food Creations” but hey – call it whatever you want – you still win by eating tasty stuff at Souplantation and trying something a little new.
I explained the …

Our flight landed in Tampa at about 10:30PM. Jake and I were still on West Coast time so we were still pretty awake despite the long plane ride across the country. Chris, our friend and host extraordinaire for the week, took us to the first pit spot of the entire trip. He took us native San Diegans to a Mexican restaurant! Chris said this was probably the best Mexican place in town and it’s a little different from anything we …

[recipe] avocado orange and tomato salad
April 28th, 2014 Mary, Recipes Mary Desjean 4 Comments

Recently I was eating lunch at home with Maya and watching Ina Garten do her thing in the Hamptons. On this particular episode she was making an Avocado and Grapefruit salad which immediately piqued my interest. Avocado and fruit and a vinaigrette, that’s it?! Laura was coming over to join me for dinner that night and I thought a little twist on that idea would be a perfect starter for us that evening.
I don’t particularly like grapefruit though so instead …

A couple of weeks ago when I showed the strawberry lemonade and strawberry lime cheesecake bars I meant to show the rest of the dinner that week, too! But I got sidetracked, so slacker that I am is showing you now.
(PS – Today’s the last day to enter to win tickets for the Taste of Hillcrest this weekend!!! Enter and stuff!)

I used the same rub I’ve created in the past to smoke a pork butt and a rack of St. …

veggie grill / utc – la jolla, ca

Let me admit this off the bat – I wasn’t sure if I would really like this place. I got an invitation to come in and I already knew I probably couldn’t get Jake and S to go here over the weekend, so I opted to go for lunch on my own. Veggie Grill kind of sounds like a place that would serve strange looking tofu burgers and unflavorful wannabe fake food. Let’s take a little journey on my adventure …

revisit to souplantation + a giveaway!

Souplantation is one of the only buffets that I find acceptable to dine at. Everything tastes much fresher and there’s a good variety of items to get here. I was recently invited to dine here to check out a few of their newer menu items.

Jake, S and I went to the Souplantation in Mira Mesa one recent weekend after going to see the Lego Movie (which was super cute and you super have to go see it). It was in …

lemonade / newport beach, ca

For dinner, I choose Lemonade. Lemonade is a Los Angeles chain, serving American style cafeteria food. The only reason I ever heard of Lemonade in the first place is because I was sent a copy of their new cookbook earlier this year.

Browsing through the cookbook was intriguing since there were a lot of fresh sounding and different recipes in the book. It made me want to visit the associated restaurant to see what made Lemonade so popular.

Lemonade is situated on …
