king of nablus sweets / el cajon – san diego, ca

I found this place by accident.

Jake, T and I were at Fred’s in El Cajon and I wanted something sweet. A quick search on my iPhone (I love you, iPhone) showed me a few places. I spotted a place called King of Nablus Sweets. Read on their Yelp review that they have baklava here, so I made Jake drive us over there.

I’m glad he caters to my whims, otherwise we would have never discovered this little place!

We walked in and just saw trays and trays and trays of baklava.

[Mini Roses – Cashew Baklava]

Seriously, I never knew there were so many different kinds of baklava!

[Pistachio Baklava]

The baklava was divided by the type of nut filling – they had walnut, cashew and pistachio baklava.

[More Baklava – no idea what the red drops are]

The lady behind the counter was very nice and greeted us and asked if it was our first time in the shop. We told her it was and asked her questions about the baklava. Then she asked us if we wanted to sample some of the baklava. We agreed, of course.

She started to give us whole pieces to share between the three of us to try. We’d point to something, ask if we could try that, and she’d say, “Sure!” and give us a piece.

The baklava here is so heavenly. It’s really, really crisp. You can tell it’s freshly made since it really retains it’s crunch. And the nuts used are lovely and delicious in each bite.

Our favorites were the rolled up (or baklava fingers) ones. There was one that was made with rose water that was a bit too much for me, but I loved the smell of rose water wafting through the store.

[Our take-home tray of Baklava]

She asked us if she could put together a little tray for us to go and I agreed. It costs about $7 a pound for baklava and our tray weighed just a little over a pound. I think we paid almost $8 for the tray above. Totally, totally worth it. You can tell them exactly what you want put in, but I thought it would be fun to just try a bunch of other pieces later on.

This stuff is rich though. Be sure you’ve got some friends to help you eat all of this delicious baklava!

[Case of Cookies]

They don’t just sell baklava, either, though that seems to be their main thing. They’ve also got cookies, cakes and other middle eastern treats.

If you’re in the area or just want to be adventurous and try out some good baklava, you should give this place a shot!

  1. I wish I just didn’t read this post. Knowing this place exists is really bad for me plus samples so you can try them all?

Additionally, are those rum balls I see in the display case?

    1. I know, it’s kind of evil to know about this place. It’s in El Cajon though, maybe that will deter you a little? 🙂 We were surprised she gave us all those samples to try and that really made us want to buy some. I’m not sure if they are rum balls, but they very well could be!

  2. well then, i’ll just have to find out if those are rumballs! ha ha!

i like the variety of baklava here. my favorite is the rolled up kind or the triangular. i’ve never seen the coiled up one before – it’s pretty.

    1. Hi Carol – Oh, it was good. The rosewater one was a bit too strong for my tastes, but the rest was really delicious!

Hi CC – Haha, I am confident that you will investigate this mystery! I loved the rolled up kind, too. That’s my favorite! The nest-like one was really pretty, too. I also seemed to prefer the pistachio ones.

  3. Ooh, I recommend you also check out Sultan Baklava and Restaurant. Half the restaurant is dining and half is for their desserts which you can buy to go. They have tons of baklava too. So good. And also in El Cajon.

  4. I’ve never heard of cashew baklava, I’d love to try that! I don’t run across baklava very often, but when I do have it, I’m reminded how much I like it because it’s not an overly decadent or heavy dessert.

  5. And for the record, those are NOT rum ballz! They are coconut ballz dipped in chocolate! now i must go and devour those cookies we bought today! haha…all in the name of ‘research’!
