whimsic alley, milk jar cookies, and wacko soap plant / los angeles, ca
January 11th, 2016 Hollywood, Los Angeles County, Mary mary 6 Comments

After a very filling lunch of Korean BBQ at Han Jang Chon, we headed out to check out a toy shop in Burbank. After looking at Funko Pop toys we then headed over to a shop that I’ve read about on CC’s blog called Whimsic Alley as well as a cookie shop called Milk Jar Cookies and a kooky little shop called Wacko Soap Plant. Let’s start off with Whimsic Alley!

I’ve been wanting to visit Whimsic Alley for quite some time as …

embargo grill

Last month (also last year! haha!) Laura and I went out for a little dinner to a spot I’d been meaning to check out for awhile: the Embargo Grill. It’s a Cuban place down in the Sports Arena area (just a couple doors down from the Cravory and in the same lot as the amusingly named taco shop “It’s a Taco Shop”).

I remember this spot used to be a burger place called BGR the Burger Joint. Looking back at my …

sunny side kitchen
December 28th, 2015 Escondido, Mary, San Diego County mary 6 Comments

A few weekends ago Jake, T and I were up in North County land for another one of Jake’s chiropractor appointments. This little jaunts up north allow us to explore some unknown territory and with the help of the internet I scoped out a place called Sunny Side Kitchen in Escondido.

Sunny Side Kitchen is a super cute little cafe that’s open for breakfast and lunch. There are a few outdoor tables, too, so you could bring along a furry companion …

oatmeal pecan cookies for the 2015 food blogger cookie swap
December 16th, 2015 Mary, Recipes mary 10 Comments

I once again decided to participate in the 2015 Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap by making some awesome Oatmeal Pecan Cookies. Each blogger who participated made a donation and the money is donated to Cookies for Kid’s Cancer. Participation involves mailing out three batches of cookies and receiving three batches in return. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!
I decided to go with a really simple cookie based on the Pioneer Woman’s Brown Sugar Cookie recipe. The Pioneer Woman thinks the brown sugar is the star of the …

dog walks and a revisit to con pane rustic breads

A couple of weeks ago, shortly after getting my shiny new FitBit, I noticed that there was a DogFest Walk n’ Roll was happening over in Liberty Station. Wanting to do something fun for the weekend and something to help my new daily goal of 10K steps, I signed up myself, Jake and T and we brought the three doggies down to Liberty Station for the 1 mile charity walk.

There were a ton of people and their dogs getting ready for …

back to the future party

Another year, another birthday! Here’s a little recap of my birthday party this year which was a Back to the Future party. My party was on October 24th just a few days after the 30th anniversary (October 21st, 2015) and it seemed too good to pass it up as a theme. Here are some of the highlights of my decorations and food at the Back to the Future party:

I made this “fire tire” trail out of construction paper (which I cut …

urbane cafe + coronado brewing company
September 30th, 2015 Mary, Mira Mesa, San Diego County mary 6 Comments

Mira Mesa got a new restaurant last month! It’s over in the shopping center with the Fresh & Easy and the food court. It replaces the vacant bagel shop that shuttered earlier this year. The new place? Urbane Cafe.

Urbane Cafe is a chain restaurant that started out in Ventura, CA and has expanded to more cities in California. There’s another location for Urbane Cafe in San Diego over in Linda Vista, just down the road from USD.

Urbane Cafe is a fast …
