mama testa taqueria
October 26th, 2015 Mary, Mira Mesa, San Diego County mary 6 Comments

Mama Testa Taqueria has recently moved to my hood in Mira Mesa and I couldn’t be happier about having new restaurant options! Hooray!

Mama Testa Taqueria (which was previously located in Hillcrest) moved into an old spot that used to be a taco shop called El Maguey. I last wrote about El Maguey back in 2008. While it was good way back when, the quality of the food really dropped in the years that followed. The nail in the coffin for me was …

el cilantro mexican restaurant

Over the weekend Jake and I headed down to Imperial Beach to try and see if we could catch some Stardust Donuts. It was a failed endeavor though as we drove up we could clearly see there were no donuts left. Ahhh! Foiled again! So the trip south wouldn’t be a total loss, I found us a new-to-us place to try called El Cilantro Mexican Restaurant.

El Cilantro is tucked away in the back of the Imperial Beach Plaza Shopping Center, …

tacos el g

I went to Tacos el G (which I thought was Tacos el Gordo) last weekend with Jake, T, and Laura on Saturday night. We had just gone to see The Avengers over at the Regal Cinemas off East H Street (only $5.50 for an evening ticket!) and I wanted tacos. Laura had never been to Tacos el Gordo and we figured the National City location would be a little less crazy than the Chula Vista spot. Sadly I did NOT realize this …

carnitas uruapan revist

We hadn’t been back to Carnitas Uruapan in awhile. If you remember, I like calling this place Uhura (Star Trek, yo) instead because I kept forgetting how to say “Uruapan.” It pretty much still happens to this day. Sometimes I’ll just look at Jake and say “Uhuraaaaaaa!” and he’ll know what it is that I want. Ain’t that awesome?

I last wrote about Carintas Uruapan back in 2013 (thought we’ve been back many times) and I’m happy to see that the menu …

rodeos meat market

Tacos! Tacos are a completely lovely thing, aren’t they? Street style Tijuana tacos are even better than “normal” tacos with their oodles of meat and simple toppings. When you find a hidden taco gem if feels like you just stumbled upon a secret clubhouse filled with treasures. That’s how Jake and I felt when we found Rodeos Meat Market.

Jake had been wanting to visit another place in this little strip mall off Market and 47th street. Said place wasn’t prepared …

¡salud! by the san diego taco company / barrio logan

Last weekend Jake and I felt like young adults again, going out for dinner and a play. At night! On a Friday! By ourselves! This is a rare thing these days.
We were going over to Coronado to check out the play, Avenue Q, and needed a little dinner before the show. Jake nixed any suggestions I made for dining in Downtown so I went with a place just outside of Downtown in Barrio Logan. A new place called ¡Salud! which is …

la palapa nayarit / imperial beach | nestor

I consider La Palapa Nayarit to be in Imperial Beach though I know it’s called “Nestor”. I’ve just always associated that whole area with Imperial Beach! My childhood friend, Sarah, moved around a lot but they seemed to always end up living in Imperial Beach and I spent a lot of time in this area. Once we got off the freeway that seemed close enough to Imperial Beach for me. Hah!
La Palapa Nayarit is a place we visited during the …
