Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers / National City

Whenever Jake and I head out to Vegas, one stop we always make is at Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in Victorville. We love their steakburgers and were pretty excited to find out they would be expanding to San Diego! Freddy’s finally opened in National City on October 11th, 2016 and Jake and I visited the following weekend.

The new Freddy’s is just off the 5 off Mile of Cars Way and just across the street from In-N-Out Burger. Kinda ballsy if you ask me, but I’m thinking they want to pick up on any customers that don’t want to wait in the long line that usually snakes around In-N-Out. We arrived at Freddy’s just after they opened on a Saturday morning.

They have a few outdoor tables as well so you could bring a furry friend if you need to. They also have a drive-thru.

There were a ton of people working back in the kitchen the day we visited. It was their first Saturday so I’m sure they had no idea how much volume they would get that weekend. Since we went early there wasn’t much of a line but there seemed to be a steady flow of customers coming in.

Drink options. I was sad to see they didn’t have the flavored iced teas here that they have in Victorville. Regular iced tea is fine for me, though.

Freddy's Steakburger and Fry Seasoning

There are bottles of Freddy’s Famous Steakburger & Fry Seasoning near the area where you get your food. There’s also ketchup and fry sauce here. We usually grab one of these bottles to sprinkle on a little extra seasoning on our burger and fries. We even have a bottle of this stuff at home! I like the mix of spices in their seasoning.

Oreo Nutter Butter Custard Sandwiches are relatively new – we haven’t seen those before. I’d rather just have nutter butters without the oreo.

Original Steakburger with Cheese - Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | National City - San Diego, CA

[freddy’s original double steakburger with cheese combo / $8.49]

This is what I usually get – the double steakburger with cheese added, no pickle thank you very much. If you order it “California” style it comes with cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes but I like it with just onions and cheese. I feel the single steakburger isn’t meaty enough and that the double steakburger is “just right”.

Thin burger patties at Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | National City - San Diego, CA

When they make the steakburgers at Freddy’s, the meat is pressed into the grill to make a thin, crispy edge on the burger. Here you can see it’s kind of thin and almost lacy.

I adore the crispy edges on the burger! The meat manages to stay nice and juicy while you’re eating it. The cheese is melted in between and on top of the second patty creates quite a cheesy experience. I really enjoy these burgers!

Triple Steakburger at Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | National City - San Diego, CA

[triple steakburger / $7.59]

Jake ordered a triple steakburger for himself, sans cheese. This looks like way too much to me but that’s what Jake wanted that day! This photo at least shows what the burger top looks like – you can see it looks like it formed a nice crust on the top. Jake didn’t like this as much without the cheese – he felt something was missing since there was no cheesy goodness on here! The pickles are pretty large here, if you like that kind of thing.

Cheese Fries at Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | National City - San Diego, CA

[cheese fries / $3.09]

Jake got his cheese on the fries instead. I really like their thin, crispy shoestring fries but I don’t think I need them with cheese in the future. They were good but I just like my fries plain.

Onion Rings at Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | National City - San Diego, CA

[onion rings / $2.79]

I was on an onion ring kick that weekend and we ordered a side of onion rings. Pretty good – nice coating on the batter and they didn’t taste super greasy.

Fry Sauce - Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | National City - San Diego, CA

Here’s Freddy’s fry sauce, which I actually like! It’s a little tangy and creamy and way better than ketchup.

Concrete Sundae - Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | National City - San Diego, CA

[mini sundae / $3.19 – additional toppings are $0.80 cents]

Besides steakburgers, Freddy’s is also known for their frozen custard. They have vanilla and chocolate custard available. Jake got me this mini sundae with Reese’s pieces and peanut butter. I love the sweet and salty flavor combination of the peanut butter with creamy vanilla custard and the crunch of the candy shells from the Reese’s pieces. One of my favorite combinations!

Luckily Freddy’s is just far enough away from my house that I won’t be going here all the time – but I’m glad that I can get my Freddy’s fix more often now!

Coronado Dog Beach

Jake and I bought an extra steakburger to drop off with T who was working at his weekend job. After dropping him off some lunch, we took the dogs over to Coronado Dog Beach.

Coronado Dog Beach

Surprisingly enough we had never been to Coronado Dog Beach before. Usually we only go to the dog beach in Ocean Beach. Someone was leaving just as we pulled up near the entrance to the dog beach and were able to get parking close by. It was a pretty day to be at the beach!

windblown-maya

Here’s Maya scoping out the beach.

short-round-ready-dog-beach

Shorty was ready to GET OFF THAT LEASH. We usually leave him on the leash though because once he’s off leash, his mind goes into la-la land and he never comes when we call him. Little bugger.

naval-base-line

We walked all the way down the beach to the border of the naval base. When I was a kid my dad used to take me on base and we’d go to the beach over there. A lot less crowded on base at the beach in the summer time!

running-maya

Here’s my little fluffball running back to me. Isn’t she the cutest?!

  1. Great action shot of Maya! Love it! Now I’m curious to try those pressed grilled latties. So justone would be too thin then? I’ll have to try a double like you did.

Yes, that was prettty bold for them to be right across from In ‘n Out , but hey, healthy competition , right!

    1. Thanks, CC! I had to take a few photos to get that shot but I like it.
I prefer getting the double patty for the extra cheesy goodness that comes along with it. Since the patties are pressed they are thin but still juicy. We went again last weekend and the restaurant was full inside with a line in the drive thru so I’d say they are doing pretty well!

  2. I should know not to read food blogs late at night. I want to rip into that triple burger with pickles and onions, but even if I left right now, I wouldn’t get there until after the place closed. Soon I’ll go. Sooon….
