[revisit] jeong won korean bbq buffet

A few weeks ago I had a serious hankering for some Korean BBQ. Jake and I talked about going someplace new but I’d been stuck on the idea of revisiting Jeong Won. Jeong Won is a little different from the other all-you-can-eat places since it’s a buffet. The buffet style allows you to choose exactly what you want to get. One just one piece of chicken to try it out? You can do that here! And I appreciate that flexibility instead of having to commit to a whole plate of something you may not enjoy.

Here’s a peek at the front entrance from our table.

There weren’t a lot of people hanging out here on a Sunday afternoon.

Another view inside – this is looking towards the back where the food is kept.

Side dishes! Instead of giving you a bunch of bowls of banchan, you can pick it out yourself. This works great for us since we don’t eat a lot of the banchan.

The one thing I always get and google up in the Korean style potato style. Holy goodness, that stuff is addictive to me! It’s smooth and creamy, almost like mashed potatoes, with bits of carrots and veggies in it. It also has a touch of sweetness that I really enjoy.

Veggies! Jake and T didn’t get any veggies because they are bad, bad, bad.

But hey, to each their own. They’d rather fill up on meats which makes it a better deal. But I like to have some veggies, too.

They offer a few seafood items which is nice.

There’s lots of different meaty options. The beef brisket is one of my favorites!

I usually skip the chicken – I can get chicken whenever, man.

Beef and porky goodness is where it’s at for me!

Sauces | Jeong Won Korean BBQ Buffet - San Diego, CA

The other thing that I love, love, love about Jeong Won is their variety of sauces. Other places we’ve been too don’t seem to have as many and that’s such a shame.

Included with our meal were bowls of miso soup. I’m not a fan of miso soup so I didn’t touch this.

Korean Pancake | Jeong Won Korean BBQ Buffet - San Diego, CA

T went nuts over the Korean pancake and had about 3 bowls all to himself!

Is this bowl filled with the same as the one above? I think so. I ate this bowl. It was delicious.

First Plate | Jeong Won Korean BBQ Buffet - San Diego, CA

My first plate had a little shrimp, some pork belly, and a few different cuts of beef.

Along with mushrooms, onions, zucchini, corn on the cob, plus my favorite potato salad.

Sesame Sauce | Jeong Won Korean BBQ Buffet - San Diego, CA

This is the sesame sauce which is one of my favorite sauces they have here.

I also got the “smoky” sauce (which tasted like BBQ sauce) and ginger sauce. I liked mixing them together – mostly the sesame sauce with some ginger sauce. Yum! It helped give the meats some extra flavor.

The boys left a spot for me on the grill. Aren’t they nice?

Mmmmmmmeaty time is almost here!

Aw. No hugs for poor little cactus.

The price has gone up since our last visit in 2014 – it was about $75 total for the three of us, so $25 per person instead of $20. They also don’t have the soft serve machine anymore, boo! I was stuffed though so I didn’t NEED any soft serve, but it would have been a nice after lunch treat. I’d still totally recommend Jeong Won for the food and self-yourself style which I really like. The service was attentive – we got our grill changed out halfway and they checked on us often for pancake refills. Excellent stuff!

  1. This is still my favorite AYCE KBBQ I think. The option to choose from the buffet is pretty neat. I noticed they did indeed increase the price and you have to get your own rice now (at the buffet). The sesame sauce is my favorite too! And the pancakes! Sometimes I’ll put the pancake on the grill to crisp them up even more.

And, um, something looks different with T’s hair..

  2. I took Bert here for his bday a few years ago. We liked it – they had good selection there with everything it seemed. They just had the wierdest random crap on their walls though, a mixture of art and inspirational sayings printed out and taped on the wall. I wonder if they still have the frog legs. I tried one and thought it was okay but would definitely not get it again.

    1. I didn’t see any frog legs, haha. Or was that a special thing to order? They do still have the random crap on the walls with all the random quotes! I really like the buffet style here and all of their sauces!
