rita’s italian ice – mira mesa

Rita’s Italian Ice is slowly infiltrating all of San Diego by popping up new locations all over the place! The Rita’s in Mira Mesa opened about two weeks ago and I decided to stop by for a little quickie visit last week.

This location is in the inner part of Mira Mesa off of Camino Ruiz, near Capricorn Way. There’s a new(ish) California Donuts shop nearby, a Filipino restaurant, Little Caesar’s, Azteca Mexican (a market) and Ariana Produce (another market). Ariana Produce has something called mustard oil which I almost bought but wasn’t quite sure what to do with it so I didn’t. Must do research!

Rita’s of Mira Mesa is bit larger than the other two Rita’s I have tried (Bonita and Rancho Penasquitos). This Rita’s actually has tables and chairs so you can sit inside and enjoy your treats on the spot.

It looks pretty much like all of the other Rita’s locations. I saw quite a few people and families stop in for a creamy treat. I’m sure this location will do well being a bit further into the neighborhood!

I actually didn’t care for any of the Italian ice flavors they had that day. It seemed to all be too sweet candy-based concoctions like Swedish Fish and Sour Patch Kids. They did have a Gingerbread ice which I tried but I felt it was too odd to want a whole cup of.

I did notice that they have four flavors of custard: Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla and Vanilla Light. I asked what the difference was between the two vanillas and Vanilla Light is what you’d expect – it’s the “lighter, semi-healthier, less calories” version of frozen custard. The nice woman working there let me sample both side by side and I have to say that the flavor is pretty similar. The Vanilla Light was maybe slightly less creamy and a little airier than the regular vanilla but the flavor and texture are pretty much the same.

I opted to get a sundae with the Vanilla Light custard. I got it with Reese’s Pieces and peanuts since I’m a fiend for peanuts and peanut butter. The woman working the counter forgot but then asked later if I wanted whipped cream and cherries, but I declined.

It was a nice little after-work treat and I could see myself stopping in from time to time for a little frozen goodness. Welcome to the neighborhood, Rita’s!

    1. Haha, that would have been funny! Rita’s are all over the place! I think I read they’re also opening one in Scripps Ranch. One in every neighborhood seems to be what they’re going for.

  1. I didn’t even know there were restaurants in that area! Is this behind that 7-11 or something? Anyway, I went to the Rita’s in PQ and there weren’t too many flavors I was interested in trying. I wonder if they mostly have ‘unique’ flavors… but sometimes I just want the classic flavors!

Also, if you have the app, you can play their little game weekly to get a free stamp. But I do find it takes 10+ minutes so I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

    1. Hi Lynn – Yes! It’s in the next shopping center over from the 7-11. There’s a plaza over there but with a glance you can’t really tell there are restaurants over there, but there are a few! I read they also serve hot food in Ariana Produce so I want to try that out soon. I didn’t know Rita’s had an app or a card program. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip 🙂

  2. I am not a fan of the fruity flavors, but TC loves it. The only exception is blueberry and pineapple, haha. I am happy when they have their chocolate chip or their mocha. My favorite combo is the gelati (custard with the Italian Ice). Looks like Rita’s will be all over the place soon. Hopefully the market for this will not crash and burn.

    1. Hi CC – Yeah, I like the non-candy inspired flavors at least. I like strawberry stuff, too, but I don’t like the fruity stuff that much either. I haven’t tried the mocha! That would like it would be great with the custard. The first time I went to Rita’s we got gelati but they have to have an Italian Ice I want to eat to get that. They are opening up Rita’s very quickly, I hope it doesn’t crash on them either.
