Fruteria La Buga

Jake invited me over for dinner one night last week. I thought Jake was going to make dinner but I found out that T had found a new restaurant for us to check out. That’s how we ended up going to Fruteria La Buga.

Fruteria La Buga is in the University Square plaza in Rolando, off University Avenue. This is in Jake’s hood and T noticed this newer restaurant when they went to GameStop recently. This place is T’s “first find” for us to visit.

A lot of various Mexican foods are available here at Fruteria La Buga such as escamocha, chamango, tostilocos, smoothies, and juices.

One interesting thing they have is a crepe station!

And here’s the flip side.

Cheesy nachos at Fruteria La Buga - San Diego, CA - This Tasty Life

I wanted some Nachos [$3.50, large]. Luckily for me the cheese on these were not too spicy. You can get jalapenos added if that tickles your fancy. These are simple but good.

Lomo (Beef) Torta Sandwich from Fruteria La Buga - San Diego, CA - This Tasty Life

I thought at first that “lomo” was pork but actually it is beef. That was what I wanted so the boys ordered a Lomo Torta [$7] for us to share. The sandwich comes on a nice soft bread that was toasted. The outer part has a nice crusty-crunchy texture while the inside of the bread was nice and soft. The bread tasted fresh, too! There’s a layer of shredded beef and the sandwich is topped with lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, mayo, and chipotle sauce. I think I ate the half that didn’t have any avocado on it because I couldn’t see nor taste it, but I can see it peeking out on the left side of the sandwich above. Overall it was a good, solid sandwich. Nothing fancy, but it’s a good simple sandwich.

The boys also ordered a Ham and Cheese Torta [$7]

It had the same bread and toppings as the Lomo Torta. I’m not sure what kind of cheese they use. I’m not particularly a ham and cheese fan so this sandwich didn’t do it for me but Jake and T really enjoyed it. All of us really enjoyed the bread they used!

Making a crepe at Fruteria La Buga - San Diego, CA - This Tasty Life

T and I went over to watch them make the crepes for us. Once the crepe was smoothed out, it was flipped over and then the toppings were added. First the nutella.

And then the bananas and strawberries. They only have one kind of crepe here and this is it – but I’m sure you can adjust it as you like.

Nutella, Banana, and Strawberry Crepe with Chocolate Sauce and Strawberry Ice Cream - Fruteria La Buga - San Diego, CA - This Tasty Life

T bought the crepes for us and got two of them with ice cream. Not sure of the price on these, sorry! One came with Strawberry ice cream and the other (not pictured) came with a Coconut Pineapple ice cream. I preferred the strawberry as I felt the coconut pineapple was too sweet. The first two crepes came out with a drizzle of Hershey’s chocolate sauce so I asked for the third one to come plain as I’m not a big fan of Hershey’s chocolate sauce.

The crepe maker came by and asked if I would like whipped cream on it since I didn’t get the chocolate sauce and I said yes. She made it nice and pretty! I would have preferred this without bananas, too, but that’s just me. It was hard to taste the nutella in the crepe since it was put in lines instead of spread out. The crepe also was very chewy and tasted a tad overcooked, but it was still an enjoyable dessert. T really loved the crepes and that coconut pineapple ice cream. I thought they were okay – they’re not terrible but I’ve had better ones.

When we were leaving, Jake asked us all what our rating of the place was (out of 10). Jake gave it an “8”, T gave it a “9.5” and I gave it a “6.5”. There you go for perspective! T was happy that I even gave it a 6.5 and said that was pretty good for his first restaurant find. Haha!

  1. Lomo is ‘tenderloin’.

I like these Mexican fruterias – they have everything there (drinks, snacks, tortas, and smoothies). I’ve never seen one that offered crepes though. Good find!

    1. Hi CC – Ohhh, okay, thanks for letting me know! I didn’t know that’s what lomo meant. They do seem to have a little bit of everything at these fruterias. And they are usually relatively cheap!
