waffle nut donuts from vons
August 22nd, 2014Mary, productsMary Desjean 4 Comments

Have you been to Vons lately and seen these new donuts? They’re called “Waffle-Nut” – as in, a hybrid of a waffle and a donut.

I spied these a couple of weeks ago and have now finally tried them all so I can report back to you. You’re welcome.

The very first one I tried was the Cinnamon & Sugar Waffle Nut donut. It looked promising. It had a good amount of sugar and cinnamon sprinkled all over the donut. But, I …

[product review] chipz happen
August 20th, 2014Mary, productsMary Desjean 6 Comments

I love snacks, especially crunchy snacks, so I was more than happy to receive an offer to try out a new locally made tortilla chip called Chipz Happen. Chipz Happen is a family run business and they make gourmet tortilla chips (“chipz”) in four different flavors. The chips are Non-GMO, Gluten Free, have No Trans Fat and they use Rice Bran oil to fry the chips.

The idea/recipe comes from the mom of the family and the daughters helped to create the …

this is what we think of the new lay’s potato chip flavors
August 5th, 2014Mary, productsMary Desjean 18 Comments

Jake and I decided to go out and grab the new test flavors for Lay’s Potato Chips contest “Do Us a Flavor”. The new flavors in contention are: Cheddar Bacon Mac and Cheese, Mango Salsa, Cappuccino, and Wasabi Ginger.
I’m not good at doing videos so you get photo reactions to 3 of the 4 new Lay’s Potato Chip flavors. We didn’t want to try (and didn’t see) the Wasabi Ginger flavor. I don’t like wasabi as it is, I can’t possibly see …

farmers outlet / grantville – san diego, ca

I love going to grocery stores. I know some people are not really into shopping or grocery shopping but I love it! I love looking at new and different products and searching for new things to cook and bake with. Over in Mission Gorge near the Kaiser hospital on Zion there’s this Farmer’s Market that I have eyed for years but have never gone into. A couple of weeks ago after a quick stop for tortas at Tropical Fruit Paradise, I managed to convince Jake that we should check it out. Not that it takes much to convince Jake to do things. Maybe it’s because he likes me or something.

national bbq month / whiskey bbq sauce recipe
May 21st, 2014Mary, products, RecipesMary Desjean 6 Comments

With Memorial Day coming up this the weekend and the unofficial start of summer on the way, it’s easy to see why May has been declared National BBQ Month. The longer days and warmer weather make it the perfect time to start bringing all of your cooking outdoors. Here in San Diego we’re lucky enough to be able to grill pretty much all year, but sure is a lot nicer to grill when it’s warm outside.

I was recently given some …

[product review] asian snacks part two
May 2nd, 2014Mary, productsMary Desjean 0 Comments

Another edition of crazy Asian snacks! All of these are again from H Mart, where I like to browse the aisles looking for different snacks to try.

Yes! Chips! Why! All! The exclamation points?!

These are sort of like popped crunchy air chips. They are a bit sweet and a bit salty and I really liked the texture of these. Maybe the exclamation points have a point after all. Yummy!

I got these because they said “During my stay in caffe” which just …

[product review] crazy snacking with piattos, kikiriki drumstix and pastino
March 28th, 2014Cheap Eats, Mary, productsMary Desjean 6 Comments

Doing a quick little post today on some uh… interesting looking snacks I picked up at H Mart recently. I’ve bought a lot of the weird snacks at various Asian markets to give away to other people and I find I don’t always try them myself… so I figured I’d start! Here’s what I picked up during this round of snacks.

Jack ‘n Jill’s Piattos was the first thing I picked up. I grew up with Jack ‘n Jill’s products. When …

[recipe/review] peanut butter chocolate chip cookies
March 3rd, 2014Mary, products, RecipesMary Desjean 4 Comments

Peanut butter is probably one of my most favorite things in life. Peanut butter + chocolate is one of those killer combinations that is so very hard to resist as well. If you want me to be in your favor, give me peanut butter and I’ll be in your corner. Enter a new, local product that’s hit the shelves around town recently called Pacific Beach Peanut Butter.

The peanut butter spread (which is a “spread” because “peanut butter” must contain 90% …
