lulu’s bread & breakfast + hiking in red rock canyon in vegas

Jake and I spent a lazy day at the hotel after we got into Vegas. We had plans to go out and do Fremont Street and the like… but ended up just watching TV or staring out of our cool 26th story window. Sometimes you just need a night of doing nothing to kick off your vacation! The next morning we were up and about and headed out to breakfast far, far away from the strip at a little place I found called Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast. Bread & Breakfast! Oh man, I loved the name already so of course I had to put it on my “to visit” list. Let’s check it out!

I have no idea what part of Vegas Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast is in. It’s north and about a 20-25 minute drive from the Strip. I felt like we were in No Man’s Land since there wasn’t a lot around us. Lulu’s is in a strip mall near a Target with a pizza place attached on the other side of the building (which is run by the same folks that run Lulu’s).

It’s really cute and cozy inside. Through those double doors is more seating – perhaps for the pizza place? You can wander in there and sit, too, if you’d like. There’s plenty of seating here plus tables outside for your furry friends to join you for breakfast.

We sat at a little table off to the side to try and avoid the creeping sun. This is the view towards the front counter where the baked goods are. They also sell bread for you to take home (hamburger buns, loaves of bread, cookies, etc). A nice couple in front of us starting raving about the hamburger buns and told us how they like to use the buns. Jake bought a pack of brioche and pretzel buns to take home.

The cashier area had lots of beverages plus fresh orange juice.

Baked goods are my weakness! There was a lot of tasty looking stuff in the case.

I wasn’t planning getting a baked good… but I ended up getting one. What a surprise, eh.

I love the names of some of the menu items. Captain America! The Herman had “Muenster” cheese! Benecio Del Porko!

Jive Turkey! The Empire Salad had NY Cheddar! 305 is the area code for Miami!

I love this kind of stuff.

I noticed that the “305” sandwich came with a Cubano coffee and Jake asked if we could order that on it’s own. The answer: Yes, you can. I almost got a peanut butter coffee.

We didn’t see this menu until after we ordered. If we had, we might have had some menu changes. B.A.T Ship Crazy Egg Sandwich! Kanye West for President! I was so amused reading the menus here.

Nutella Croissant at Lulu's Bread & Breakfast | Las Vegas, NV | This Tasty Life - http://food.theplainjane.com

[Nutella Croissant]

Once I spied the word “Nutella” in the pastry case… well… I couldn’t resist. I didn’t pay attention to the price of this either, sorry. What did I do with the receipt? Who knows. I was too excited to eat.

I carefully split the croissant into two halves to get a look at the inside and was not disappointed to see quite a bit of creamy nutella stuffed into the flaky, crunchy croissant. We were asked if we would like it heated and of course we said, “Yes, please!”. The warmth makes the nutella a little runny and a bit gooey and a whole lot of messy but it’s worth it. I got nutella all over my hands and face but I didn’t care because it was delicious!

[Cubano Coffee]

I also got my tiny cubano coffee in a huge paper cup. You can see the coffee way, way down in the bottom. This coffee was STRONG and I liked it. It was almost a little too bitter and strong but a bite of the croissant and a quick sip of coffee gave it enough sweetness for me to enjoy it. This coffee will definitely kick you in the pants and wake you up!

Benecio del Porko Breakfast at Lulu's Bread & Breakfast | Las Vegas, NV | This Tasty Life - http://food.theplainjane.com

[Benecio del Porko / $9.95]

The Benecio del Porko was going to be ordered. Oh yes it was. It was the item I saw online that made me want to come here and check out Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast! It’s like an eggs benedict… but instead of an English muffin they used grilled cornbread (!!) and top it off with BBQ pulled pork, over easy eggs, hollandaise sauce, charred corn, and cilantro!

This dish was FULL of flavor! The grilled cornbread was delicious – not too crumbly, good texture, and just a little bit sweet. The juicy BBQ pulled pork made for a nice savory addition. I loved the bits of charred corn for a little crunch with the eggs and creamy hollandaise sauce.

Typically I’m not into the runny egg thing… but it really worked in this dish to give extra flavor to everything. God I loved that cornbread as the base.

Dirty Chips at Lulu's Bread & Breakfast | Las Vegas, NV | This Tasty Life - http://food.theplainjane.com

[Dirty Chips / $6]

Jake really wanted this dish… so we got it. The “Dirty Chips” have kettle cooked chips on the bottom and it’s topped with pulled pork, hollandaise sauce, cotija cheese, and cilantro.

It was almost like a breakfast nacho! The creamy hollandaise tasted great with the crunchy chips and savory bits of their tasty pulled pork. I was kind of stuffed and couldn’t eat much more and we ended up taking most of this to go. A very filling and comforting meal to start our day of fun in Las Vegas!

Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon | Las Vegas, NV

After breakfast we headed out to Red Rock Canyon.

Red Rock Canyon | Las Vegas, NV

The landscape in Red Rock Canyon is beautiful with lots of red rock formations. There is a 13 mile scenic one way loop that you can drive through with lots of little stops and trails along the way. It costs $7 per car to get in. There’s a visitor center near the entrance and the will give you a map when you get in so you can get a sense of where you are.

This particular area is near the beginning and has the most red rocks in the loop. Jake and I got out to take a peek!

Whoa, rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon | Las Vegas, NV

This is a very popular spot for rock climbing and bouldering. Yeah… there’s no way I’m ever doing that!

Vista View at Red Rock Canyon | Las Vegas, NV

Driving on a bit further we came to an overlook spot. We walked out to the edge of this little hill for a closer look before moving on. We drove further down and I wanted to hike the “Discovery Trail” but there was no parking!

We ended up heading to almost the end of the loop and drove on a dirt road down to a little area with more trails and went for a little hike.

It was a beautiful (although very rocky!) hike. It was in the upper 60’s, too, which made it perfect hiking conditions. Sunny, bright, but not too hot! In the distance you can see the red rocks we first visited just to the left of my head.

Red Rock Canyon is a cool spot to check out if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Strip for awhile.

  1. That nutella croissant looks beyond amazing!!! Usually there’s barely any chocolate in a regular chocolate croissant so that pic of the nutella version makes me so hungry. The pictures of Red Rock are beautiful – can’t believe that crazy person climbing in one of those pics. Scary.

    1. Hi Faye – I know, I hate when I get a chocolate croissant and there’s like, one little square in the middle somewhere. This nutella one was oozing with filling – I loved it!

There were a bunch of little groups of people doing rock climbing and it all looked super scary to me. There was a little area where you could walk down to a big rock jutting out over a canyon – Jake wanted to go down to it but I was like “Nope, nope, nope!” I get pretty stubborn when it comes to stuff like that – my fear of falling off of high things kicks into overdrive and takes over haha.

  2. Yeah! Star Wars shirt!

The landscape looks amazing there. That’s cool you guys had a fun hiking. The foods looked good as well, especially the breakfast nachos (although I’m not a fan of Hollandaise). That’s pretty hearty along with that grilled cornbread with pork! Wow. Great combination!

    1. Yeah, gotta represent the nerdy Star Wars side of me! Haha!

The hike was really nice and pretty – also thankfully not too warm. The food was amazing! I liked that grilled cornbread!

  3. Love your Star Wars shirt! And I also love clever menu item names 🙂 The pork benedict has everything I love in one dish… cornbread, pork, and MOAR CORN! hehe
