The Waffle House is a large chain restaurant… that hasn’t made it’s way to California quite yet. On our road trip to Phoenix, AZ last month we discovered the Waffle House because it was A) extremely close to our hotel and B) it had all you can eat dinner, which Jake is a big fan of.
We drove around a little bit in the area near our hotel before deciding on the Waffle House. I don’t remember what the special was exactly, but it was a fairly cheap price for all you can eat. They had other things besides waffles on the menu, like hamburgers and such, but I wasn’t going to visit a “waffle” house without having the staple, so I had breakfast for dinner that night.
I got pecan waffles, hash browns, and bacon for my “dinner”. The pecan waffles were excellent – lots of nutty goodness in the batter (though, as you can see, mostly in the middle more than anywhere else). They weren’t super crisp like Belgian waffles are, but a little crisp and soft and good doused with butter and syrup. The bacon was also good and crisp, just the way I like it (can you tell I like crispy things?). The hash browns were a disappoint to me. They were not as crisp as I had hoped, though they certainly look like they would be. Jake told me I didn’t like them because I compared them to Keith’s hash browns and nothing compares to those hash browns. He’s right though. Every other hash browns I eat seem a disappointment in comparison. Oh well.
In any case, we all enjoyed our breakfast-for-dinner meal at the Waffle House and wistfully thought about a Waffle House opening in San Diego. Alas, I don’t think this is the case. But we plan on traveling back to Phoenix for spring training next year and maybe we will meet with the Waffle House once again.
