Grand Ole BBQ y Asado / North Park

One recent weekend I was feeling like eating some BBQ! Jake, T, and I headed over to North Park to check out a place I’ve heard a lot about called Grand Ole BBQ y Asado. We went on Sunday when they do their Argentine BBQ. The smells wafting from this spot made me think we were really in for a treat!

Grand Ole BBQ y Asado is open til they sell out. Which I imagine happens quite a bit.

When you stand in line, smoke smells waft towards you from this giant smoker.

Then you go over to the window to pay and that’s where you order any sides or drinks (if you want them).

Our spread for the three of us.

Potato Salad Sample | Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

I asked the nice gentlemen behind the counter if the potato salad had pickles or relish in it. It doesn’t, but it has pickled jalapenos in it. They gave me a little sample to try and while it wasn’t pickle-y it was hella spicy! It was very creamy though but way too spicy for me. I’m glad they let me sample it first.

Skirt Steak with Chimichurri at Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

[skirt steak with chimichurri sauce / $10 per steak]

Skirt Steak sounded magical to me. You have the option to get this with or without chimichurri and I said, “YES PLEASE!” Jake told me later he didn’t really care for chimichurri sauce, if I had known that I would have gotten it on the side for him. Me though? I loved it! The herbs really added to the flavor for me. The skirt steak was incredibly tender, juicy, a little smoky and just plain old DELICIOUS.

Short Ribs at Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

[beef short ribs / $20 per lb]

The short ribs were also another hit for us. I think the best part of the short ribs was that it didn’t NEED any BBQ sauce on them. I dipped them in BBQ sauce anyway but they really didn’t need anything else on them. You can see a little bit of the pink smoke ring on the ribs above. There was a nice bit of fat on some of the ribs and the smoke/flavor was incredible.

Chorizo at Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

[chorizo sausage / $14 per lb.]

This is one sausage worth of chorizo which is about 1 lbs. This had a nice flavor to it though it wasn’t my favorite dish of the day (that honor goes to the skirt steak). This had a good amount of flavor and wasn’t spicy (which was good for me, the spicy weakling). Jake enjoyed the chorizo a lot more than I did – he thought the flavors were really good.

Polenta | Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

[polenta / $3]

Polenta! I love this stuff. Really yummy side dish. It’s simple and good. It’s got a coarse grain texture to it. Bit creamier than grits.

Peruvian White Beans | Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

[peruvian white beans / $3]

I’m usually not a fan of beans but I have to say these Peruvian White Beans were surprisingly creamy. I really enjoyed the creaminess of the beans along with whatever spices they stuck in there. Eating the beans resulted in a smooth texture in my mouth which I liked. They kind of melted in my mouth as I ate them. Really excellent side dish!

Dr Pepper | Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

Real Dr Pepper, yo.

BBQ and Sides at Grand Ole BBQ y Asado | North Park - San Diego, CA

I have to say I was quite impressed with the BBQ from Grand Ole BBQ y Asado. What I liked best is that none of the meats NEEDED sauce – they stood up just fine on their own! Everything we had was high quality and exceedingly delicious. We definitely want to return on another day to check out their Texas style BBQ as well. If you have the chance to stop by, I definitely recommend it!

    1. Oh yes, we’re totally planning on a return for Texas style! I’ll let you know! Probably can’t do it til the end of the month.

    1. Hi CC – It’s a sign of good BBQ if you don’t need the sauce! I prefer it with sauce but it’s nice that it didn’t taste like it needed it. Hope you guys get to try it soon!
