Have you been to Vons lately and seen these new donuts? They’re called “Waffle-Nut” – as in, a hybrid of a waffle and a donut.
I spied these a couple of weeks ago and have now finally tried them all so I can report back to you. You’re welcome.
The very first one I tried was the Cinnamon & Sugar Waffle Nut donut. It looked promising. It had a good amount of sugar and cinnamon sprinkled all over the donut. But, I found this one to be too soft. The texture was a little off for me and the flavor was just okay.
The next one I tried was the Maple Waffle Nut. This one has a heavy maple glaze which filled in the waffle holes on top. This one had a much nicer texture and it was slightly crisp. I believe the glaze helped to preserve the crispiness of the inside. The edges had a nice light bite to them. But… the glaze on this is way too heavy and too thick. There’s just too much of it and it quickly becomes too sweet and a little overwhelming. It’s better to share this one with a friend.
The Glazed Waffle Nut was a little bit better. It didn’t retain as much of the outer crunch but it was there in a slight way. The overall flavor though is kind of “meh”. This one was again on the softer side and the glaze didn’t really do a whole lot for it.
By the time I got to the Chocolate Waffle Nut I didn’t have much faith left, but this one is actually the best of the bunch. There’s a lighter amount of chocolate glaze (not overkill like that silly maple one) and there’s a lovely light crispiness to the edges. This one tasted more like a donut to me then the other ones which tasted like … I don’t know, weird sugary cake-like things? This is the only one that I’d get again since there seemed to be crispiness in every bite and the chocolate is nice (not too sweet).
My conclusion? Try the chocolate one. The others are kind of meh. I got my donuts in the morning at Vons in Mira Mesa. The donuts are on sale this week 2 for $1!
