el maguey / mira mesa – san diego, ca

El Maguey is a little taco shop tucked into one of the corners of Mira Mesa. It’s got no drive thru, they close early, and pretty soon they will be flanked by Roberto’s and Santana’s. But guess what – it’s good. It’s worth it. Take a trip in and taste some delicious food.

My only qualm about this place is that the guacamole is not as awesome as I would like it to be. It’s a bit runny and if you get rolled tacos, they give you the weird guacamole that has sour cream mixed in with it which I think is gross, so I just get it with sour cream only if I get them.

The best thing on their menu is the carne asada burritos, wet style. They smother a gigantic burrito with sauce and melted cheese and put the fixings on the side for you to slather over each piece. It’s heavenly.

Also, if you sit down and eat inside, you get a basket of chips and their salsa bar. The salsa is a bit spicy for my tastes, so I gently dip my chips in before eating them, making sure to not drench them so I don’t set my mouth on fire. But then again, I am kind of wimp.

They also have a lot of seafood related items here which I haven’t tried. Once, my boyfriend got some rolled potato tacos but they tasted fishy to us, so I guess they must have used the same oil for the fishy stuff as the non-fishy stuff. Small complaint.

Mmm, burritos!
