Elijah’s is a little place tucked away in La Jolla, near the Whole Foods on Nobel Dr. I’ve been here a few times throughout the years and the food has been consistently good. It’s a New York style deli, which pretty much means to me that they load tons of meat onto their sandwiches. They also have “overstuffed” sandwiches which seems insane to me. But there it is.
Alyssa and I went here recently for a Sunday afternoon lunch. Alyssa had a nice little incident with a patron’s dog. A couple near out table outside had their two dogs with them, unleashed and wandering around. One of their dogs went up to Alyssa and put it’s head right into her lap and when she tried to pet it, it barked at her. The owner came by and yelled at the dog to go back to their table like nothing happened. I myself would have been embarrassed if my dog had done that, but oh well.
As for the food – we both had half sandwiches – I went for the BLT ($5.50 for half) and she went for the Beef Tongue sandwich ($6.50 for half). She’ll have to tell you about all the wonders of Tongue sandwiches since I know nothing of these wonders. As for my sandwich, it has lots and lots of bacon, which made me happy. You’ve had a BLT before. There’s nothing to different from this one, aside from the fact that it had more bacon than more BLT sandwiches I’ve had before. The potato salad was also tasty and delightful. All in all it was a good meal.
Elijah’s a good spot for a quick meal and a nice alternative to some of the other restaurants in the area, if you feel like having a meaty sandwich in your belly.

I was very pleased with my side salad, which had a nice assortment of veggies, and not just the dump of bagged variety lettuce or the iceberg/red cabbage/carrot melange you see most places. As far as my sandwich went, I’ve actually never had tongue as a deli meat before. My mom used to cook it for dinner sometimes, and I’ve also had tasty lengua tacos. Deli meat tongue is way pinker and saltier and almost reminds me of pastrami with a slightly more tonguey flavor. I suppose that comment isn’t really specific to this place, but is just a tongue generality. Back to the restaurant. My only complaint was that my sourdough bread couldn’t withstand the mass of meat in my sandwich. The bread was falling all to pieces by the time I was halfway through, leaving me with messy mustard hands. Otherwise, awesome meal. The end.
