fluffy duffy’s snow cream / college – san diego, ca

Last week after Jake’s first softball game of the new season (they had a two week break and won 20-9 for their first game, woohoo!), we headed over to Milo’s Pizza for a couple of slices of our favorite pizza (ricotta/mushroom is my favorite topping now). Lo and behold next to Milo’s was this place:

Fluffy Duffy’s Snow Cream! What! It had been maybe a little over a month since we had last been to Milo’s and the place next door had sat empty for quite some time, so I was excited to see something new open up next to Milo’s – and a dessert place to boot! I was pretty darn excited/curious and Jake had to practically drag me away saying “We’ll investigate after dinner”. Okay, okay, okay.

The investigations took place as promised.  There was no one else in the shop except for the gal at the counter, who offered us free samples of their “snow cream”. I found out that snow cream was just what I thought it was – snow ice (or shaved snow, or whatever the heck the “official” name is)! They take big blocks of flavored ice and use a special machine which churns it out in pretty, delicious ribbons. They have a some interesting flavors here, such as Chile Mango:

This reminded me of that chile Mexican candy. Sweet but gave you a kick in the pants. We also tried Black Sesame (which Jake just thought tasted like coconut), the Horchata (tasted very weak, like a watered down horchata), and Chocolate Almond (tasted like chocolate pudding or chocolate frosting, came out thick).

toppings

Here are some of the toppings they have available. In addition to these, there are also fresh fruits which I forgot to photograph.

The gal working the counter was surprised that we knew what Snow Cream was. We told her there’s a place in Mira Mesa that has it and that we also had it up in LA. She said that her and her partner had it a lot up in LA but couldn’t really find it down here in San Diego and that’s how they were inspired to open the shop, which has now been open for one week! I read on Fluffy Duffy’s website that the shop is named after the owner’s large corgi, Duffy, which is also a “fluffy corgi” (since he’s larger and poofier than other corgis). Hence… Fluffy Duffy! I wish I had met Duffy that day, too!

We got a  regular size for $3.50 (“huge” is also available for $5) with Coconut Snow Cream and Mochi. I choose “White Chocolate” for our drizzle. They also had chocolate and caramel for drizzles – no sweetened condensed milk sauce here.

The snow cream was very light and fluffy and had a nice creamy texture. I really liked it a lot! It was melt-in-your-mouth yummy and didn’t need anything extra, really, but the addition of mochi and white chocolate sauce was still a nice addition. I’d like to try the Strawberry or Peach next time simply because we didn’t try those ones out this time around.

I don’t remember why Jake is flexing in this photo… I was getting a shot of the inside with him in the photo. Maybe he’ll read this and remind me. Or maybe there is no reason! There’s about 5-6 tables inside and they also serve shaved ice and ice cream in addition to the snow cream. The price is just right, especially for the College area, so I think this place could be a hit in this spot (I hope so anyway since I enjoyed it)!

Come over here and eat some snow cream! See. We’re happy campers with snow cream in our belly.

  1. Ooh a new snow ice place!! I’m excited XD It seems like they have a lot of interesting flavors – too bad the horchata was watered-down-tasting 🙁

    1. Hi Jinxi – Yes, I haven’t seen the chili mango or horchata anywhere else so it was fun sampling some different flavors. Coconut might have seemed boring after our other samples but we really liked it.

    1. Hi Kirbie – If we hadn’t gone for pizza I doubt I would have heard about this place! Hope you get to try it out soon, it seems more reasonably priced than other ones we have tried.

  2. Ooh, the chili mango sounds good as well as the black sesame. Snow Cream is just another interesting way to rename Shaved Snow. Yay, A new place to visit….

  3. Hi Mary! Gal at the counter here..aka Alex. Thanks so much for posting this about Fluffy Duffy’s! We’re trying to get the word out & appreciate any & all feedback! We’ll have to work on our horchata snow cream and we do have condensed milk now. Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know!

    1. Hi Alex – Oh cool! I’m glad to hear you guys have the condensed milk now. I’ll have to stop in again soon and see what flavors you’ve got now. Thanks!
