A couple of weeks ago Jake and I went out for a little breakfast. Jake started a new job and sometimes he has to work on Sundays. This was one of those days. I decided we should at least have a nice breakfast before he had to go off to work in the evening. I wanted to check out some place nearby and I picked El Clasico Diner over in Lemon Grove.
El Clasico Diner is a pretty small place. On the left there are a few booths and on the right counter seating. We sat right on the corner so we could be adjacent to each other without being weirdly sideways. We got to watch them cook everything, too, so it was kind of like breakfast and a show!
El Clasico Diner used to be known as the “Bleu Whisk Diner” but it was taken over by a new owner who added a few Mexican dishes to the menu.

And the lunch menu at El Clasico Diner. They close at 2PM so no dinner menu here.
This is a side order of Biscuits and Gravy [$2.50]. It’s a pretty generous amount for the price! We think they used chorizo in the gravy instead of the traditional sausage for a little twist on the flavor. The biscuits were light and fluffy and tasted great with the gravy on top.
We also shared the Chicken Fried Steak with eggs and hash browns [$9.95]. We got the eggs fried over hard. I wanted to see if I would like it more over hard, but no, I didn’t really. Some days I like eggs, most days I don’t. The hash browns were fine, nothing to write home about in my book. They had some crispy edges to them.
The chicken fried steak itself was quite good. It had a thin crust to it and a nice juicy interior. There was plenty of gravy on top as well. It managed to maintain its crispiness even with the gravy all over it, which I like.
I’m always debating if I want sweet or savory! Savory usually wins but sometimes I just want a couple of bites of sweetness. This side of Blueberry Pancake [$3.75] fit the bill for us! It had a nice amount of fresh blueberries inside and the pancake had a nice crispy exterior while maintaining a light, fluffy inside. I sparingly used syrup but I thought just a little butter on top was grand.
If you’re looking for a no frills little diner then El Clasico Diner really fits the bill. It’s a cute and cozy little diner located in the heart of Lemon Grove. Not too busy, not too rushed, and the food is simple and comforting.

Aw, we liked Bleu Whisk Diner. It was very narrow in there but the people were nice. Hopefully this new place is pretty good too. The eggs over hard looked wierd. Not the way I would make mine. The hash browns looked nice and crisp. I want to try their CFS.
Hi CC – I think it mostly looks the same inside if I remember correctly. The food is good! It’s simple but good. I liked the biscuits and gravy and their chicken fried steak! I’ll just let Jake eat the eggs next time.
