[revisit] the huddle

A couple of weekends ago Jake and I continued our breakfast pilgramage and revisited a spot we haven’t been to in awhile: The Huddle! The Huddle is an old school diner nestled into the heart of Mission Hills. A lot of change has happened on Goldfinch Street. Back in the day this is where Phil’s BBQ was located and a few of the restaurants have been swapped out for newer spots, like The Patio. The Huddle looks the same though with it’s old school diner feel – it feels like a throwback to the 1960’s (or earlier).

On this particular day we had all three of the puppies with us and sat outdoors for our morning meal.

There are a few outdoor tables and they gave us a bowl of water for the puppies as well.

Puppies!

Hi puppies!

The front of the menu. They still had Christmas tablecloths outside even though it was February.

Pecan Roll - The Huddle | San Diego, CA | This Tasty Life - http://food.theplainjane.com

[pecan roll / $4]

I really wanted a cinnamon roll… but they ran out of them and were prepping more. But the ones being prepped weren’t ready for baking yet. SO SAD. Our waiter went to check if there were any pecan rolls left though and there was ONE LEFT. It was a sign that it was meant for us.

This sucker is piled high with pecans in a gooey sauce. And a SIDE OF A BUTTER. Like my thighs needed that.

But hey. It’s a once in a while treat so yeah… we but the butter on top. Duh. Look at it melting!

The pecan roll was nice and warm and was kind of like eating a warm, gooey, pecan pie but with a roll and lots of extra butter. Totally rich and totally fabulously sugary. I still prefer the cinnamon roll here because they GRILL the cinnamon roll and then put cream cheese frosting on it. I’ve got photos of the grilled cinnamon roll on my old post from 2012 if you need proof/want to drool over that.

Our Breakfast at The Huddle | San Diego, CA | This Tasty Life - http://food.theplainjane.com

Our shared breakfast involved chicken.

Fried chicken.

With a SIDE OF BUTTER for the waffle. Hell yeah for diners!

[chicken and waffles / $11.50 + side of hash browns / $2.50]

As soon as Jake heard the magic words “Chicken” and “Waffles” from our waiter (who was telling us the specials) it was like nothing else existed to him. I went along with it because I like chicken and waffles, too. Who doesn’t?! We also got a side of hash browns since I like them here.

My half of breakfast - The Huddle | San Diego, CA | This Tasty Life - http://food.theplainjane.com

I’m so glad we shared everything because this was a very heavy but oh-so-delicious meal. The waffle is belgian style – it’s thick and fluffy and has nice crispy edges on the outside. The chicken was excellent. The batter tasted extra super crunchy – I wonder how they get this texture on the chicken! The chicken was also very juicy and flavorful. I topped it with a little maple syrup and loved the salty-sweet combo I created on the plate. The hash browns were a little too buttery this time around for me (I know, I’m talking crazy over here) but they were still quite tasty.

Comforting, homey, diner food at it’s finest, my friends. Hope you swing by for a visit!

  1. Ok. You’re now my breakfast guru. That is a generous chicken and waffles dish! Is that FOUR pieces of chicken I see. I don’t think I’ve seen melted butter offered with waffles before – does it taste better than slathering butter on top of waffles?

I was curious why the dessert menu says ‘Baked Goods , Better than Homemade’. Almost sounds like they purchase desserts elsewhere that are better than their own homemade items?

I’m a breakfast kick at the moment so hopefully will try out the Huddle soon!

    1. Dang it I just noticed my comment didn’t post from the other day!

Yes, it was FOUR pieces, can you believe it! Very generous amount of chicken!

I prefer slathering the butter on rather than pouring it, myself. Seems too easy to put way too much butter on when it’s poured on top. I hope you get to check it out, Faye!
