I’ve got another giveaway in store for you fine folks! Kirbie of Kirbie’s Cravings has graciously given me a copy of her new book, 5 Minutes Mug Cakes, to giveaway on the blog today! 5 Minute Mug Cakes is the perfect book for when you really crave a little something sweet but don’t want to either a) leave the house or b) bake a whole cake. Instead, in just a few minutes, you can mix a few ingredients into your favorite oversized mug, pop it into the microwave and PRESTO! Dessert. It’s a brilliant notion, really.
I’ve already tried several of the recipes from this book (which is also super cute with the fun, colorful pages and little tips and tricks throughout the book). S has recently expressed in interest to learning how to cook (he always wants to watch MasterChef Junior when he comes over) so I put him to work and taught him how to properly measure ingredients.
Uh, which ones of these spoons is it again?
He did the same recipe four times over. Repetition is the key to learning, right?
Sidenote: Seriously, use an oversized mug. I was trying to use a smaller mug to get a “prettier” mug cake. But yeah. Didn’t work. Instead I got to watch a magic trick happen in my microwave. A magic trick that I had to clean up immediately.
I will call this photo, “My First Mug Cake”. Heehee.
These aren’t the prettiest but whatever. They taste good. And anyone can seriously make these mug cakes. If you’ve got a sweet tooth and need a dessert fix every now and again, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Kirbie’s book! My favorite recipe so far is the “Chocolate Lava” mug cake, which has a little piece of chocolate wedged in that gets all melty and chocolatey and delicious. There’s so much variety in the book though that you can’t go wrong – from “skinny” recipes that are less than 200 calories, breakfast mug cakes, and much more. Right after the recipe you can enter to win your own copy of Kirbie’s book!
- 4 tablespoons purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 4 teaspoon granulated white sugar
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 3 tablespoons chocolate peanut butter cup spread
- 1. Combine all ingredients in a microwave-safe mug. Mix with a small whisk until batter is smooth.
- 2. Cook in microwave for approximately 1 minute 20 seconds. Top of cake should look done/be dry. Let cake cool a few minutes before eating. Cake is best consumed while still warm or within a few hours of it being cooked.

A photo from the book – Hostess Mug Cake!
I compared the photo from the book with your photo of the finished product. I feel we are twins, for some odd reason.
I’m just keeping it real over here. Not everything I make is pretty. Hahah.
A little powdered sugar on top makes everything look good!!
Powdered sugar is a lifesaver sometimes.
