DONUTS! I haven’t posted about donuts in awhile. I’ve actually found that a lot of donuts are…. omg… TOO SWEET for me now which has downed my donut consumption. But recently I visited a new spot in Hillcrest called Copper Top Coffee & Donuts. They make freshly fried donuts throughout the day! Could this be a better (not sickly sweet) donut? Let’s find out!
After Jake and I had lunch nearby, we drove over to Copper Top Coffee & Donuts. This is on Washington Street in Hillcrest, less than a block from Bronx Pizza. They have a drive-thru window and a parking lot which offers free 30 minute parking for Copper Top customers.
Here’s the front of the building with the walk up window.

And the donut menu!
After I placed my order, I peeked in through the window and saw that my donut was being topped then and there just for me. I believe the base donut is all the same (a cake donut) and the toppings are what set the donuts apart. The donuts are made fresh all day – every 30 minutes, in fact!
All donuts are $2! Jake and I ordered two donuts to share.
I choose the Bear Claw which is a donut topped with honey and almonds. I figured this wouldn’t be uber sweet and I was right! The honey is drizzled on top and provides just a touch of sweetness to this tasty cake donut. Since the donuts are pretty fresh, you get the crisp texture on the outside and just a little bit of a “crunch” from the donut’s exterior. The inside is fluffy and the texture is perfect since it’s still fresh. I loved the crunch of the almonds on top as well. Really simple but a really good little donut!
Jake ordered the School Lunch donut which is topped with peanut butter sauce, raspberry sauce, and a ton of peanuts on top! The raspberry is a nice tart contrast to the peanut butter and being a nut lover, the peanuts gave this donut a lovely extra crunch. This one wasn’t too sweet either, which I very much appreciated.
Both donuts were excellent and I loved that they still had that fresh taste to them. Winner winner! If you’re in the area and craving a donut, give Copper Top a shot and check out their yummy fresh donuts!

They spiffed up their menu, which is nice. Bert and I visited on New Year’s Day and enjoyed our donuts. We liked that they were fried fresh, but found that the sizes for the donuts varied from donut to donut. The PB and J is new. Bert would like that one! The only thing with fresh hot donuts is that sauces are runny and gets too messy. Your donut pictures are awesome by the way. 🙂
This used to be an abandoned Wienerschnitzel. Glad they found another use for this space!
Hi CC! Ohh, interesting to note the menu got spiffed up! Our donuts were fresh, but not straight out of the fryer so our sauces didn’t get too messy. It’s a great way to use that building, too! It looks totally different which is cool. Bert’s gotta try that PB&J!
