I have one more Restaurant Week thing to post about, but it’s late night on Sunday and it’s too many photos so I don’t wanna. Not yet anyway. Look for that one later this week.
Instead, I’m going to share a little place I discovered for breakfast this weekend. I was heading up to Encinitas to purchase some cupcakes for a Red Velvet Cupcake tasting I organized this weekend (also coming very soon in a post near you) and I had a little time to kill before the bakeries actually opened, so I took myself out for breakfast. Jake was working an early shift that morning so I was on my own. Originally I tried to go to Snooze in Del Mar but quickly abandoned that idea after driving by and seeing a bunch of people waiting outside. A quick Yelp search gave me Lockwood Table Cafe – a small “hidden” cafe in nearby Solana Beach – so off I went to investigate.
I stopped at a different cafe first along Cedros Ave before crawling further down the street to this corner plaza. You can’t see the cafe from the street – but there is a sign that says “Lockwood Table Cafe”.
The cafe is situated in the corner of the parking lot with a few shops around it.
It was about 9AM and all of the indoor seats were taken, so I sat outside. It was a little chilly but I didn’t mind. It was a nice morning. I sat next to this cute VEG (Vertical Earth Garden).
There were about three more tables to the right of this larger one. A few people with dogs came by and sat outside for a little breakfast.
I looked over the menu, but I already knew what I wanted after reading through the Yelp reviews. Here’s a link to the Specials Menu, Menu 1 and Menu 2.
[japanese cherry green tea / $3]
Since it was a little chilly Saturday morning, I decided to get some hot tea. They have a variety of Organic Whole Leaf Teas here which are served with a little tea filter and come with this cute little jar of honey.
How adorable is this with its tiny little spoon?!
Reminds me of some salt cellars I got at Anthropologie (mine are in green though). The tea was really excellent and had a bit of a fruity-sweet and mellow flavor. I didn’t even need to add honey to it. My waitress was nice enough to bring me a little pot of hot water so I could have more tea.
[nut butter plate – housemade walnut butter, fresh berries, multigrain bread, honey / $6.50]
I felt maybe a little weird just ordering nut butter for breakfast, but it turned out to be pretty filling. The housemade walnut butter is super freaking good, I can’t even tell you! If you’re a fan of nut butters or walnuts, you’ll totally dig this. It’s ground down to a lovely texture where it’s sort of creamy and a little crunchy all at once. It’s luscious and rich and insanely good smeared over the bread.
A little drizzle of honey on top gave it a touch of sweetness. The walnut butter is not sweetened but is a bit salty so the honey gives it a bit of that salty-sweet thing. Really just a delicious way to meander through a breakfast. The strawberries were also surprising good for this time of year.
I wanted a little something meaty to go with my plate, so I also got a side of bacon ($3). It came with four pieces of slightly thin but very crunchy bacon. It was perfectly crispy and a nice extra salty component to my breakfast. Yum!
And now, I leave you with this “discreet” photo I took of the inside of the restaurant. Yeah….
There’s a little case with baked goods up there on the right which had muffins, cookies and other simple baked items. I didn’t partake since cupcakes were in my near future.
All in all this was a lovely, quiet and relaxing spot for reading and eating a little breakfast. And that nut butter was so so good… I’d come back for more of that delicious stuff!

“Discreet”. : ) You are so slick.
That zig zag thing with plants growing in it? Solace & the Moonlight Lounge in Encinitas has one of those too.
That was a nice way to start of your day – bacon and honey toast…to prepare yourself for massive sugar overload later that day! 🙂
Hahah… I just looked at my photos later and laughed at myself. I am a huge dork, but who cares! It was a nice way to start the day before the massive sugar fest, but it was a super cute spot. I just wish it had been a little bit warmer. I bet it’s perfect there in the summer!
