Classics Malt Shop – San Diego, CA

The Classics Malt Shop is a little 50’s diner tucked away in a shopping center food court in Sports Arena. And it is little – there are a total of 3 booths and about 9 or 10 seats available at the counter. Since it is in a food court though, there is outside seating as well so you can order and eat out there. The walls are decorated with a lot of car-related items as well as 50’s item to give a little charm to the place. You order up at the counter, you can watch the cook prepare your meal and sit down for an enjoyable lunch. The service was really excellent. The guy behind the counter was friendly and warm and made sure we had everything we needed by just giving us a little holler from behind the counter (we were sitting in a booth about a couple of arm lengths away from the counter).

Classics Malt Shop - Bacon Cheeseburger & Fries

On my visit, I decided to have try something classically American and had the Bacon Cheeseburger with Fries (what’s not more American than a burger and fries?) for $7.49. I liked the burger – classic taste, bacon was crisp, good bun. I would have liked it a little more medium cooked, but it’s not like I asked for that (I didn’t even think about it until later). The fries I thought were just okay. They were a little overcooked for my taste and not really crispy the way I like them. All in all though, a solid burger and fries combination.

They have some other interesting sounding burgers as well, such as the Ostrich burger and a Buffalo burger. I’m curious as to what an Ostrich burger tastes like … I wonder if it tastes like chicken?

In addition to burgers, they also serve sandwiches (such as a Philly cheesesteak, reubens and a lemon-pepper chicken sandwich), hot dogs (like chili cheese dogs, sauerkraut dogs, corn dogs), salads (chicken salad, ceasar, cobb, chef), sides (they have fish and chips as well as onion rings, chili-cheese fries and hot wings) and a kids menu.

Classics Malt Shop - Strawberry Milkshake

Now, it’s a sin to go to a “Malt Shop” and not get anything from the soda fountain. It is! I complied though and got a Strawberry Milkshake ($3.95). Now… this is made with REAL ice cream. My milkshake even had bits of actual strawberries on it (like, big half-strawberry size pieces, not tiny little chunks) which made it totally delicious. It was thick, rich and creamy and a definite winner. They take the time to properly make a milkshake, with gets tons of stars in my imaginary book. Bravo! They also have malts, ice cream freezes, ice cream sodas, root beer floats, ice cream sundaes, Italian sodas and sodas with real flavorings (such as cherry, vanilla or chocolate for your coke).

If you’re looking for a 50’s type joint for some classic American food (and excellent milkshakes) then Classics Malt Shop is an awesome place to go to statisfy your cravings.

  1. this looks good, especially the shake. i’ve been wanting a GOOD hamburger for quite some time now. would you say that this is the best milk shake you’ve ever had?

  2. I would say it’s one of the best I’ve ever had. Not a lot of places make them with real ice cream anymore – and they don’t usually have real fruit in them, either! The whipped cream on top tasted home made, too. And it’s relatively cheap for a milkshake – $3.95! I just had one this past weekend at Corvette’s Diner and it cost $5.50 and wasn’t as good as this one.
