Heavenly Cupcake is a cupcake shop (they call it a “lounge”) in the Gaslamp Quarter which sells… cupcakes! They’ve been open since September 2008 and they have 7 cupcake flavors available daily. I made my first visit to Heavenly Cupcake over the weekend with a friend to try out a few of their cupcakes.
The shop itself very cute and cozy. They have a few tables inside and a couch with a coffee table. You can also sit at the counter top while you eat your chosen cupcakes.
We visited on a Saturday and I was quite happy to see that one of the flavors I really wanted to try was there that day – the PB Chocolate cupcake. I love peanut butter so I was very interested in this cupcake. We also sampled their signature flavor, the Orange Chip cupcake (this one is available all week long – except Mondays, because they’re closed on Mondays).
I tried the Orange Chip cupcake first. It was very light and had a good, strong orange flavor. You could not mistake this for something else. The addition of the chocolate chips gave a nice balance to the whole cupcake. It was moist and made for a nice snack. The chocolate frosting was also good – it wasn’t overly sweet and you get enough of the frosting to spread over the other half of the cupcake (which is what I did with my half).
The second cupcake, the PB Chocolate, was also excellent. This one is a bit richer and more decadent – the bottom seemed to be like a Devil’s Food cake kind of bottom – very rich and chocolaty and there was a surprise of peanut butter chips in the cake. The frosting had a good peanut butter flavor too – my tastes probably could have even gone for a stronger peanut butter frosting, but it was good just the same. The peanuts sprinkled on top was also a nice touch for a little bit of crunch.
My only complaint about this place is that you can’t just get a glass of water. I see the angle, of course. They only sell cupcakes. Cupcakes will make you thirsty. Hook them in to make them buy a drink. They have bottled water ($2), milk ($2.25) and iced tea and other bottled beverages in their little fridge. The cupcakes themselves are $3 a piece. A dozen cupcakes will run you $35, or if you want them in a designer box, it’s $45. They also have mini cupcakes available certain days of the week as well as $1 frosting shots. They also had a little display of “Pupcakes” ($2) for a little cupcake treat to give to your dog. You can check out their website to view their flavor schedule and when mini cupcakes are available.

I’ve been meaning to check this place out! My sister just went last week and really enjoyed their cupcakes. It’s on my list the next time I’m downtown. 🙂
I was recently visiting San Diego and this little shop made my day! It is so cute (and delicious). I had never seen a cupcake lounge before and I loved the ambience. Naturally, I had to buy a shirt imprinted “Peace, love, cupcakes”.
