philadelphia sandwich co. / clairemont – san diego, ca

The Philadelphia Sandwich Co. is a little restaurant tucked away in Clairemont (right next to the Original Pancake House) that pays homage to all things Philly. The restaurant is decorated in Phillies gear with lots of related sports memorabilia (Eagles, Phillies, etc). They sell Wise chips and Tastykakes and call their sandwiches “Hoagies” instead of what we call them… sub sandwiches.

I love cheesesteaks. My roommate in college was from Pennslyvania and took me to Philadelphia over Spring Break one year and I had one… but it was the cheese-whiz variety, which is not my favorite. I like the one with actual cheese, like provolone, melted over the top of my tasty, thin sliced meat. Mmm.

I figured a trip to the Philadelphia Sandwich Co. would satisfy my cheesesteak craving and give me a new place to go to seek this delicious treat.

Well. It was just okay.

The sandwich was all right. It filled me up and was good, but it didn’t seem as flavorable as it should be. Something about it seemed to not quite hit the mark – but it wasn’t terrible, either. Maybe what really ruined the experience was that the fries were terrible. There were undercooked and had a really raw potato taste and were obviously not cooked long enough. The fries of course were not the center part of my meal, but they made the experience less enjoyable since they were inedible.

Maybe there will be another place to for my cheesesteak cravings, besides hitting up the mall food court. I hate going to the mall. I would rather find a nicer little local place to go and eat Philly related foods.

  1. I agree with you on Philadelphia Sandwich Co. It’s not horrible, but it’s somehow lacking. Have you tried Gaglione Bros in Pt Loma or Giorgino’s Deli in South Park. I like both of them, but I’m not a native Philadelphian. I think they both use Amorosa rolls from Philly, and white american cheese by default (and Provolone and Cheez Whiz by request).

  2. I have not tried either place, but thank you for the suggestions! I will take a look at those places and see if I can find a good place to satisfy my cheesesteak craving.
