margo’s mexican grill / pacific beach – san diego, ca

Update: This restaurant is now closed.

I was expecting Margo’s Mexican Grill to be a little quaint restaurant tucked into Pacific Beach – and it is – except that it’s in a little strip mall off of Garnet Ave. It doesn’t look like much from the outside – just another taco shop – but its cozy and comfortable. One thing they have here that they don’t have in most taco shops is happy hour! Happy hour is during the weekdays from 4-7PM, which we took advantage of by each ordering a strawberry versions of a margarita and a daiquiri for a mere $3 a piece.

I had the daiquiri (not shown) and it was pretty good – they just use the regular mix stuff that you find most places but it was good for $3. They also have beer and you-call-it specials during happy hour.

Now, onto the food! I ordered the chicken enchiladas in a red sauce, with refried beans and mexican rice. The food came out quick and hot and was really delicious. The enchiladas were very flavorful and tender and I gobbled them right up, making sure to scoop some sour cream into each bite. We also got chips and salsa with our meal (included) and I used those tasty, crispy bites to scoop up the majority of my beans. The rice was also good and much more to my liking. I usually shy away from mexican rice because I don’t like it when they put chunks of tomatoes into the rice. This rice was free of intruding chunky tomatoes – bliss!

I actually found this place with a random search. I have one of those Entertainment books and I love it for the coupons. I was browsing around online to see what kind of deals were available and I spotted this place in Pacific Beach. I thought it was a coupon inside the book, but it was actually an online printable coupon. My coupon was pretty mangled looking because I was running out of ink in my printer, but the waiter still happily took my coupon. It was buy 1 get 1 free, up to $14. Woo!

To sum up: good mexican food in an unlikely spot in Pacific Beach. I hope to visit again to try a few other things on their menu since the enchiladas were so good. Mmm.

  1. For those us not lucky enought to have Margo’s down the street from us, you can order the ingredients to make most of this stuff from places like http://mexicoetal.com or mexgrocer. Finding the necessary ingredients here in Lima, Peru has been hard. The few Mexican restaurants here I wouldn’t take my grandmother to.

  2. That is not true you can’t find all of the ingredients for all the food that they make at that website. the majority of their food is secret recipes so don’t believe them.
