[revisit] Funky Fries and Burgers in El Cajon

Jake and I first went to Funky Fries and Burgers back in 2015 when they had just opened! It was time for a revisit! We took T since we had been meaning to take him here for awhile and this one was one of our last chances before he is off to join the Army (what).

Funky Fries and Burgers - El Cajon, CA

Funky Fries and Burgers moved to a bigger location – just one lot over from where they used to be. I believe this used to be a taco shop. I remember the old spot was TINY and barely had any seating so this was a great move for them. The parking lot is a little tight though. We had to leave and circle around to get into a parking spot.

Menu at Funky Fries and Burgers - El Cajon, CA

The menu (click the image above to enlarge) at Funky Fries and Burgers has expanded a bit since we last visited. Now they have “Funky’s Ice Cream Bar” with Funky Freaky Shakes. I was really tempted to get a shake but I wanted to see how full I was at the end of the meal. And then when I decided I wanted one, the line was out the door! I didn’t want to wait, so I skipped it this time.

Pizza Fries at Funky Fries and Burgers - El Cajon, CA

The boys wanted to try this concoction: Pizza Fries [$9]. The Pizza Fries come topped with pizza sauce, sausage, mozzarella, pepperoni, italian seasoning and parmesan cheese. You also get your choice of fries: regular fries, waffle fries, sweet potato fries or tater tots. We got regular fries on this one.

I loved how this looked with all of the melted mozzarella cheese and the touch of herbs on top. What I didn’t like is that the fries were soggy and tasted just barely cooked. For me that’s a HUGE turnoff. I don’t like limp fries and the fries here were either undercooked or couldn’t stand up to the sauce. Too bad! The cheese was great and I liked the bits of sausage while avoiding the pepperoni (which looks darling here, but is not a favorite thing for me to eat). Jake and T have no qualms about the texture of the food and devoured this whole basket of pizza fries. They really enjoyed it – but I’m a bit more… ahem…. particular about my food.

Gyro Tots at Funky Fries and Burgers - El Cajon, CA

The item I picked out was the Gyro Fries [$9.50]. On this one we swapped out the fries for tater tots and WOOHOO the tater tots were CRISPY. The gyro “fries” come with slices of gyro meat, grilled onions, chopped red onions, tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, and feta cheese.

The gyro meat is not quite like the thinly sliced meat that is cut off of a spit. The meat is in chunks and it’s a bit thicker – but has the same wonderful spice and flavor as gyro meat. I really liked the juicy pieces of gyro meat on this! I also loved all of the onions (onion lover that I am) and especially enjoyed that the tater tots were crisp and stayed crunchy the whole time. YAY! The tzatziki sauce was delicious – tasted like it was made in house with a good amount of flavor.

Funky OG Cheeseburger at Funky Fries and Burgers - El Cajon, CA

This is photo makes it look like we ordered a lettuce sandwich but actually this is a Funky OG Cheeseburger [$8.50]. The burger comes with Funky House Sauce which tasted a lot like Thousand Island dressing to me and was chock full of pickle flavor. The sauce was extremely hard to avoid so I only took a couple of bites of the burger before I gave up. It tasted like sour pickles to me and I left the burger to Jake and T to finish off. Next time we visit I’ll be sure to get a burger without the house sauce on it!

There are so many things to check out on this menu! Jake and I will be back to try more! I’ll have to remember that I prefer the tater tots over the fries and make sure I order a shake!
