Ice Cream Puffs at Coronado Spice & Tea / North Park

After we filled our bellies with BBQ from Grand Ole BBQ y Asado we had to get dessert! T (who’s got himself a summer job) offered to buy dessert for us. Isn’t he sweet? Dessert was only a few steps away from the BBQ and it involved ice cream AND donuts. Come and check out Coronado Spice & Tea with me!

There are a few outdoor tables here at Coronado Spice & Tea that are specifically for their shop. Otherwise the BBQ eaters would totally take it over.

Ice Cream Puffs aka Ice Cream Donut Sandwiches?! SOLD!

ice-cream-puffs-menu

Here’s the Ice Cream menu at Coronado Spice & Tea. Your first two toppings are free. It’s an additional 25 cents for more toppings for your ice cream or ice cream puff. They’ve also got coffees and teas. The ice creams are from local San Diego shops such as Niederfrank’s and Mariposa.

They also have a wall full of spices and herbs (which I didn’t take a photo of – too excited about donut sandwiches, I guess).

[ice cream puff with salted caramel ice cream + english toffee + pretzels / $5.50]

This is the ice cream puff I chose to share with Jake. The ice cream puff is like an ice cream donut sandwich! DONUT SANDWICH! So exciting!

The donuts/puffs have no hole in the middle. They are split open and filled with your choice of ice cream and your toppings. The puff has some nice crispy edges. It’s airy but it holds up to the ice cream filling. Jake and I really enjoyed the combination of salted caramel with the crunchy, salty pretzels. I didn’t really taste the English toffee very much but I think it blended in with the flavors of the caramel and added some extra crunch. I ate this with a fork and knife at first and then gave up and picked it up with my hands. The ice cream started to melt a little and made it easier to eat. I loved how light and fluffy the puff is – a really perfect vessel for ice cream! It really starts to melt and get messy after a few minutes so your best bet is to eat it immediately. I don’t know why you’d want to wait to eat it anyway. It’s so delicious!

[ice cream puff with mexican chocolate ice cream + reese’s puffs cereal / $5.50]

T decided to get an ice cream puff with Mexican Chocolate ice cream and Reese’s Puffs cereal. The cereal was a really good combination with the Mexican chocolate – it had a light “peanut butter n chocolate” flavor going to it which is something that I like a lot. The cereal stayed nice and crunchy with the ice cream. It was an excellent choice on his part!

There’s oodles of ways to do your ice cream puff / donut sandwich and I’m excited that this is a thing that exists! It’s the perfect summer treat. The donuts are fresh and tasty and combined with the ice cream and toppings you can’t go wrong. Go and check it out!

  1. I need to go here, ha ha! I know that TC would like those ice cream puffs. Bert is interested in the bbq place next door as well. That used to be the North Park Nursery before they relocated.

    1. Hi CC – Ohhh, yeah, TC would love the ice cream puffs! I love the options and how you can really customize it and make it your own.
