rocky’s crown pub / pacific beach – san diego, ca

I’ve been wanting to take Jake here for a long ass time and a few weeks ago I was finally able to take him! We tried to go a few times this week, mistakenly making the attempt on the weekend or during prime sports game viewing periods. These are NOT the ideal times to go since Rocky’s is not a big place. We ended up going one Wednesday evening after Jake’s first league softball game (his team’s name? Ball Busters. This makes me laugh on a weekly basis.)

Wednesday night was perfect. We parked right in front and got a cozy corner seat in the back of the bar.

See? It ain’t big. We’re in the very back, and it’s really not much wider than this (it goes a little bit over more on the right, but not much).

This is the menu at Rocky’s. This is the whole menu. It’s all they do, besides beer, kind of like In-N-Out. If they served beers and put on sports games.

The only difference between Jake and I’s meal was I got a 1/3 lb. burger and he got a 1/2 lb. I love how the cheese completely covers the burger and engulfs is it in cheese happiness. THIS is how you melt cheese, people. Perfect!

The burger comes with simple fixings – mayo, lettuce, tomato, red onion – and you really don’t need much else. The meat was a nice medium, still slightly pink in the middle, just how I like it. The meat is simple and juicy. No frills, nothing fancy, just a simple burger. The fries were hot, crispy and deliciously good.

Jake wasn’t quite sure this was “all that” since there’s kind of hype about this being one of the best burgers in San Diego. I’m not sure if it deserves that crown, but I can say this: it’s simple, it’s good, it’s filling, it’s cheap and it’s damn tasty. It made me happy on a chilly Wednesday evening. You can’t ask for more than that: a good simple meal with someone you love.

  1. I’ve heard people say this is THE best hamburger in SD. I’ve been wanting to try it out but it’s kind of a far drive for me (especially for a burger). Do they have their own parking or do you have to find street parking only?

It’s still hard to beat In n Out in my opinion.

Did they ask here how you wanted your hamburger prepared (med rare, etc)?

    1. It is sadly street parking only. But if you go on a weeknight then you can probably score parking nearby. Weekends are crowded, as is the rest of PB! I don’t know if they asked about the burger prep since Jake ordered, but I imagine they will cook it for you how you want. It was still pink enough for me so I enjoyed it. It’s a little hyped, but it’s a good burger. They have TVs all over the bar showing the sports things, I know you’re into that 🙂

  2. Hi Mary – Best burger in San Diego? Probably not…but for around six bucks, a really good “pub burger”. Does anyone think they’ll get the best burger in San Diego for around six bucks? really? It is a prime example of what a “pub style burger” is; no frills and doesn’t depend on, say, bacon, to be a good burger.

    1. Hi Kirk – I agree with you! Maybe some think it’s the best simply for the price point – who knows! The “best” is an elusive thing anyway. Some days this will be the best, some days that $18 gourmet burger is the best. You’re right though – this burger didn’t need bacon or frills to make it damn tasty.

  3. Did you think it was better than say Burger Lounge? I’ve been wanting to try Rocky’s but so far I’m loyal to the bacon cheeseburger at McGregor’s in Mission Valley. Kindof a random location but they top with grilled onions, you can add tons of mushrooms and there’s so much shredded lettuce. Definitely my favorite burger in SD <3 haha

    1. Funny enough I haven’t had Burger Lounge. Jake & I once had a mini burger from them during Taste of Hillcrest but I don’t really remember it. I did like the Rocky’s burger though – it is simple and tasty, no frills! I haven’t been to McGregors but sounds like a place to check out (mmm, mushrooms!).
