[product review & giveaway] soofoo (super good food)

I got a new product for you to take a gander at. It’s called SooFoo. I know this looks like its some kind of super crazy too-good-for-you-probably-tastes-like-dirt-and-sticks kind of thing. And I know it looks like that because I kind of thought that looking at the packaging…

BUT… I actually ended up liking it. My parents didn’t really like it, though. My dad thought it looked like there were crickets or bugs in it and that there was maybe some twigs in it, too…

But my parents aren’t even fans of wild rice, which is something that I have always enjoyed. I was not surprised my mother didn’t like it since she pretty much only likes steamed white rice and anything else seems “weird” to her.

I don’t know how I got adventurous enough to ever try brown rice and wild rice, I must seem like some kind of wild child.

So here’s the deal. SooFoo is like this brown rice, grains and lentils concoction. Yeah, yeah, it’s supposed to be good and healthy for you. I mean, just look at the nutrition information and the ingredients:

Brown rice, all kinds of lentils up in here, wheat berries (I have no idea what wheat berries are), oats, buckwheat (I’ve heard of that crazy buckwheat pillow people sometimes sleep on… is that the same thing?), barley, rye berries…

I started out by trying the Garlic and Herb version. The spice packet is enclosed separately. I cooked this how I would with wild rice by browning the grains and rice with a little olive oil first to “toast” them and give them a little bit of color before adding the liquid and spice packet.

It takes quite a while to cook through due to the different grains in the package, but here it is once fully completed.

It’s got a lot of different textures and tasted extra “hearty” to me with the lentils and other little bits mixed in there. I enjoyed the mix of texture – there’s some sort of “crunchy” bits and some soft parts to give it a really good mouth feel. The garlic & herb flavor almost had an undertone of a curry-like seasoning as well. I would maybe even add additional herbs and garlic to give it a little more kick and freshness. I thought it was pretty tasty myself, though other people I know would be happy to just stick with regular plain old boring white rice (hmm hmm).

I didn’t try this any other way, but the SooFoo website has plenty of recipes to help you transform the SooFoo into other dishes such as a hot cereal for breakfast, an addition to morning muffins, or adding it in with stir fry, a soup, or even turned into a salad. There’s lots of way to incorporate this into your diet!

The best way to cook SooFoo, as recommended, is by using a rice cooker. And I just so happen to have a nice little package to giveaway to one lucky reader!
