d bar and karaoke birthdays

All right. My week long vacation is now over (sniff sniff) and I need to get back into the swing of things! But first… I’m going to recap what I did on my actual birthday!

Jake planned my birthday afternoon/evening so I had no idea what we were doing that day. I was blindfolded for our first stop and he and our friend Chris walked me (blindfolded) to the spot… which ended up being D Bar!

Crue fries and bacon wrapped dates. Delicious as usual. Happy hour fare, since we were too late for lunch and too early for dinner.

Pork shank wings. Nice glaze on these suckers.

Fried tempura shrimp! I got to have Jake’s piece.

And a cake & shake, plus a candle! They even gave me a birthday card, all signed by the staff which I thought was sweet. Not as sweet as this delicious chocolate cake though. Mmm, mm, mmm!

After D Bar, we went back to Jake’s house to wait for my friend Laura to arrive. Then we zipped off to the next location… which was to Coronado to watch sunset. Except that it was totally overcast and cloudy so we couldn’t see it at all, so instead we just did a quick, pretty drive around Coronado.

Then we headed to dinner and got pizza at Milo’s in College, which is one of my favorite pizza places! I totally go veggie on my pizza now, getting one slice with ricotta and mushrooms and one with ricotta and garlic. Love, love, love.

Then I was blindfolded again… and taken to Chorus Karaoke Bar in Kearny Mesa!

Here I am blowing out the candles on the chocolate and peanut butter cake Jake’s mom made for me for my birthday. Yum!

The reason Jake took me to this karaoke bar is because a few months ago when we went to Office Depot next door to get sharpies (on sale for $.50 cents, yo), I commented that it would be fun to do karaoke in a room with just my friends, rather than doing karaoke in a bar full of strangers. Jake remembered that and planned it for my birthday. He told me later that he got the idea for my birthday from that comment. 😀

The people at the karaoke bar gave me this shot for my birthday, which was set on fire…

I don’t know what the shot was called, but it had kahula in it and wasn’t super strong so it was delicious.

souju-shots

We ordered a small Lemon Soju for our table as well. We all started called it Crystal Light since it kind of tasted like that… I liked it though!

Here’s everyone in a semi-blurry photo that I took.

Jake singing “Kung Fu Fighting”. hee hee.

mary-jake-mic

Jake and I. I think I sang like three or four songs.

mary-heather-duet

I made Heather do a duet with me, but not a real duet, we just sang “Blaze of Glory” together. It was pretty awesome.

Jake did a great job of putting together a super duper crazy awesome birthday for me! And I have awesome sauce friends. It turned out to be a great birthday and just the beginning of my week long vacation. Woohoo!

  1. That’s totally cute how they blind folded you (and in a public place!).

Never had the ballz to do karaoke so good for you for the bravery –

    Jake did good !

    1. Yeah, there were a few comments/looks I guess since they get telling people it was my birthday (and that was why I was blindfolded) haha. I don’t think I could do karaoke in front of strangers, but in front of my friends it wasn’t a big deal. A couple of shots might have helped, too… 🙂 Jake did a great job!!

  2. What a wonderful surprise! I’m especially touched that Jake took a passing comment and remembered it for your birthday.

I can’t wait to read about the rest of your birthday!

  3. Allright! Jake scored himself some man points for paying attention to your wants and needs, like all men should, ha ha. But seriously, kudos to him!

That’s a cool idea to do the karaoke room with just friends. i still wouldn’t have the ballz to do that. no one wants to hear me sing, even myself.

sounds like you had an amazing birthday week filled with fun and surprises!

    1. I think a few years ago I wouldn’t have had the ballz to do it either, but somewhere along the way I got over it? I’m not the best singer, so I did my best to at least be entertaining. But the flaming shot of who-knows-what might have helped loosen me up, too 🙂 Jake got many brownie points!

  4. That is awesome Jake planned out such a fun birthday for you! I only sing in front of people when it’s Rock Band and my singing can actually be drowned out by fake drumming and guitar-ing.
