viva pops / normal heights – san diego, ca

Hot summer days demand cool and refreshing treats. The frozen treats made at Viva Pops in Normal Heights is definitely a good option for any warm day with their mix of creative flavors. I don’t know of any other place that puts goat cheese into a frozen treat. That right there is reason enough to swing by and check this place out.

Here’s their menu from the day that we visited. The menu changes and rotates and frequently, considering everything is made fresh at the store and depends on local produce to create their frozen treats. Some of the flavors that really caught my eye were the Lavender Lemonade, the Tri-Color Melon (which is made with three different types of melon) and the Key Lime Pie bars.

I was also impressed to see that they make dog pops so your pup can also have a treat! The dog pops are sold by donations, which are donated to Second Chance Dog Rescue. Tugged at my heart strings a little to hear that. Sadly I didn’t have Maya with me that afternoon, otherwise she would gotten a dog viva pop!

[Chocolate OJ, Salted Caramel, Lavender Honey Goat Cheese]

Jake and T were me for this outing and here’s what we got. T got the Chocolate OJ pop, Jake got the Salted Caramel pop and I took the plunge and got a Lavender Honey Goat Cheese pop.

T’s was a nice blend of flavor with the orange coming through with the chocolate base.

Jake’s wasn’t as salty as I thought it would be, but still had a good caramel flavor going on.

Mine though was my favorite of the bunch – it was very creamy. The goat cheese is blended in but it doesn’t overpower the pop – it’s really just seemed to make the pop extra creamy. The lavender was a hint (it wasn’t like there were pieces of lavender in my pop) and the honey added a nice, natural sweetness.

Most of the Viva Pops are about $3 – but some of the specialty pops are $3.50. A little pricey for a treat that gets devoured so quickly, but one that I’m still willing to pay for once in awhile. The unique and crazy flavors, their support of the local community and their willingness to give back make me happy to support this small, local business and their fun, frozen treats.

  1. Nice blog redesign! I like Viva Pops but I agree with the hefty price tag. It’s pretty steep for $3 and up especially if you have an ice cream addiction like me. I notice that they sell them at the Hillcrest Whole Food market too!

    1. Thanks, Darlene! Oh that’s cool they sell them at Whole Foods, too. I like their unique flavors but it’s probably going to be something I’ll just have once in awhile.

  2. hi mary – nice post! you actually got the goat cheese! when i went last month, i saw the flavor on the board. i noticed they raised their prices .50. The pops used to be $2.50, which i thought as pretty steep. But we splurged that day. TC got the tri-color melon (very pretty) and I had the blueberry tangelade and TORC got the classic OJ and cream. I like their selection. Makes me want to make my own “gourmet” popsicles.

Oooh, you have to try the paletas at Oasis down South. They are a bargain at $1.65! Just bring a cooler with ice (or dry ice) if you plan to buy a bunch.

    1. Hi CC! Yes, I couldn’t resist trying something new and a little unusual. It was really tasty! We should be heading towards the Southland this weekend so maybe I will remember to check it out. The heat wave might remind me 🙂
